In a dither over federal offi
cial's remarks about their atti
tude on the war, northwest
physicians and surgeons com
pleted plans today for their
20th annual meeting here.
The Pacific Northwest Medi
cal association convention will
be opened Wednesday with
about 300 Oregon, Washington
and Idaho medics attending. It
will be closed Saturday.
Their ire was aroused by a
statement by Paul V. McNui',
federal security administrator,
that the government might ex
ert pressure upon the profes
sion to obtain war volunteers,
at the American Medical asso
ciation convention at Atlantic
City. "There is an apparent
lack of interest on the part of
your profession to volunteer,"
he was quoted as saying.
The Oregon State Medical
society wired an immediate pro
test to McNutt, and reply. If
any, was to be aired at a lunch
eon meeting Saturday.
The telegram, sent by Dr.
Richard B. Adams, public policy
committee chairman, said in
part:
"Many of our members have
applied to army medical corps
months ago but to date have
heard nothing concerning their
applications. Other members
have received commissions two
and three months ago but have
not yet been called to active
duty. Know of no physician
in our community who is not
working 12 hours or more every
day. We deeply resent implica
tions in Mr. McNutt's speech as
reported by Associated Press."

A fluid battle raged on the des
ert approaches to Tobruk today
as the British sought to adjust
their positions while from the
rear they violently attacked the
axis columns of Field Marshal
Erwin Rommel which were
nudging a wedge toward the
coast.
The British said the Germans
were attacking near Acroma in
an effort to reach the coast and
"isolate the troops remaining in
the Ain El Gazala Salient," the
coastal anchor of the former line
of Minefields 40 miles west of
Tobruk.
Already the southern anchor
at Bir Hacheim has been wiped
out.
The British indicated a threat
to another of their fortified
boxes at El Adem. south of To
bruk, has been eased by clear
ing the enemy out of the area to
the east of that point.

tralia s north coast base, was
raided by Japanese warplanes
today for the third successive
day and few casualties result
ed. General Mac Arthur's head
quarters announced.
Twenty-seven Japanese bomb
ers escorted by fighters, the lar
gest force yet to reach Darwin
in the series of assaults over
the week-end, came over this
afternoon. The headquarters
announcement, which was not a
formal communique, said dam
age was slight.
Allied fliers, who tore into a
formation of 18 to 25 Japanese
fighters over Darwin yesterday,
shooting down four in a furious
dogfight, were credited official
ly today with saving that North
Australian city from another
air raid.
The Japanese fighter squad
ron, General MacArthur's head
quarters said, apparently was
covering a formation of bombers
lurking off the coast to repeat
Saturday's assalt on Darwin.

Tokyo, still trying to recover
face for the recent naval lick
ing off Midway island, announ
ced today that the Japanese had
sunk a cruiser of the San
Francisco type" and submar
ine in that battle. The United
States navy has announced its
losses in that battle as one de
stroyer sunk and an aircraft
carrier damaged. 1
There is no "San Francisco
type" cruiser. There is, however,
a San Francisco, one of seven
cruisers of the Minneapolis
class, carying from 9.375 to
9,930 tons each.

as his wife started from the
house for help.

nounced that Mrs. Eva Pas, 55,
had been booked on a charge of
suspicion of murder in connec
tion with the case. A postal
clerk identified her as a woman
who had mailed a package Sat
urday, he said.

miles south of Boise. The pilot
landed at Burley, 65 miles east
of Buhl.

Equal to Last Season.
Seattle, June 15 JP) Arthur
J. Kross, assistant in charge of
sugar rationing in Washington,
said that he had notified sugar
rationing officials today of a
new liberalization in allowances
for fruit canning this season.
He said that on advices from
neighboring states, and to pre
vent waste of fruit, household
ers will be permitted sugar to
preserve as much fruit as they
did last year.
Heretofore, the allowance for
canning has been limited to 36
quarts per person, at the rate
of one pound of sugar for each
four quarts of fruit. The new
allowance will remain at one
pound per four quarts, but ra
tioning boards will be author
ized to permit a household to
obtain sufficient canning sugar,
at that rate, to equal the num
ber of quarts of fruit it "put up"
last year.
Liberalization of the allow
ance for fruit canning is being
observed by the local rationing
board, employes of the board
in the Sparta building said
today.
The ration board announced
to the public new office hours,
10:30 a. m. until 5:15 p. m. week
days except Tuesday and Fri
day when the office Is open at
9 a. m. These hours have been
put in to effect due to the in
creased work as a result of
sugar for canning registration,
it was explained.

way in a battle between follow
ers of Vidkun Quisling, pro-Nazi
premier, and other Norwegians
in the towns of Rissa and
Selbu, near Trandheim.
Armed quislingites were said
to have entered the towns to
"take reprisals" against the pop
ulation but to have encountered
fierce resistance.
Disturbances were reported
also at Troendelag.

Louis F. Henderson, head of
the botany department at the
University of Oregon for 13
years and then curator of the
herbarium and professor em
eritus at the Eugene institution
until his retirement four years
ago, died in a Tacoma hospital
yesterday at the age of 88
years.
