Aj in some recent past years,
school and college graduates are
not faced this month with pros
pects of unemployment. The
majority of mule graduates will
shortly enter some branch of
the armed services. For those
having deferred status. Jobs
will be plentiful with govern
ment agencies and armament in
dustries taking the cream.
Young women, too, who desire
emplojment also have little con
cern. The status of women In
business and industry has grown
rapidly. Even without the war
many girls would find jobs open
to them today which a few
years ago would have been
thought impossible for them to
hold down.
Conditions Better

tin spite of the war, conditions
n our country as well as
throughout the work' are better
today. How I envy the young
people now graduating from
school and college. They will
play a most important part in
our future progress. My only
regret is that I am not young
enough to grasp the many won
derful opportunities which lie
within the reach of today's
youth.
. I wish I were starting my own
life all over again. When I grad
uated from college in 1898 no
such advantages and opportuni
ties awaited me as are now at
band for the current crop of
graduates.
Young people who have reach
ed the age of majority and have
completed their formal school
ing can make of their future

ut into the effort. While cir
cumstances have much to do
with success In any field, never
theless hard work, concentra
tion,, and good personal habits
re still responsible for the dif
ference between success and
failure. Above everything else.
the ability to recognize the signs
of the times and the openings
they provide is of prime lm
portance. Let us briefly examine
the outlook today.

that I want seriously to write
this week. I have said before

passengers and freight to all
parts of the worid, revolution
izing commerce,

forming and rebuilding democ
racy; in fact the veterans of
World War II may control poll
tics. 6. You will enjoy more sen
sible standard of living with

nd waste eliminated.
7. If you are an expert on
some phase of business, with a
real helpmeet for a wife, you
need have no financial worries.
8. You will enjoy new inven
tions, new products, and new
processes not yet discovered.
These will give further new
openings.
9. You are fortunate to enter
business without the handicaps
of having been trained in the
"good old days" which your
parents miss.
10. Most Important of all. you
will witness a great spiritual
awakening in which I sincerely
hope you will take a most active
part.

Red Cross Notes
An ample supply of yarn for
army use is on nana at tne tiea
Cross war rejief headquarters
in the county courthove and
an urgent call la issued for
knitters. The boys need nei
mets, sweaters, cap mufflers and
scarfs, Mrs. W. A. Gates, chair
man of the war relief depart
ment said today.
Are you doing your part?
Afghans are being knitted
for Red Cross war relief and
anyone having odd scraps of
varn of varied colors are asKea
to donate their yarns for this
purpose. The scraps may be left
at the Red Cross headquarters
in the county courthouse and
will be greatly appreciated.
Also on hand at the head
quarters Is material for sewing
and those niterested may in
quire any time during the day.
The war relief office has re
iveri a letter from the assist
ant field director at the Port
land air base thanking local
urtltinteer workers for their
services In providing sweaters

frankfurters and sauerkraut together until
bubbling. Mix prepared biscuit flour as for
drop biscuits; drop from spoon into boil
