A set of new cherry diseases
has appeared in some areas of
the Northwest in the last few
years. These diseases are caused
by a virus and can be controlled
only by removal of the affected
trees.
It is, of course, very much
our interest to keep these
afliseases from becoming estab
lished in this county. A survey
Is being made at this time to
determine if any of these dis
eases are now present here, we
hope of course that there are
none.
There is a long list of names
of virus diseases, but two that
have fairly definite symptoms
are buckskin and mottle leaf.
These could be recognized by
any grower and reported.
Typical Symptoms
The most typical symptoms
of buckskin is the small size of
cherries on affected branches
and their refusal to color or
ripen. Even after the normal
cherries are harvested, the
affected cherries remain small
and green and hang on the .tree.
In a few years diseased limbs
n the trees may die.
On mottle leaf, the most typi
cal symptom is a mottling of
the leaves. Later these mottled
areas dry up and fall out leav
lng a severe shot hole or lace
leaf affect. It should be noted
that unlike other shot hole dis
eases, the chot holes caused by
mottle leaf may cross veins. If
all the shot holes are between
the veins then it is not caused
by mottle leaf.
There are other virus dis
eases that deform the leaves and
fruits. As a rule the limbs and
trees are not killed by virus dis
eases so please do not report
these. There are also large
number of trees at the present
time that have a lot of small
red cherries that are dropping.
This is not a difcase, but lack of
pollenation.
Spread By Crafting
The only two known means of
spread of these diseases is by
grafting and by sucking insects.
Which Insects spread them are
not known.
As an effort is being made to
determine if these diseases are
present, it would be appreciated
if anyone having a tree with
these symptoms would bring a
typical branch to this office. It
is impossible to tell if trees that
are dead or nearly dead have
been effected.

owner of a Glendale airplane
parts company, on an Oregon
flight last October 25 was
brought into superior court
today.
Lynn O. Hossom, attorney
for the Knu-Vice Products Co.,
Glendale, McKenna's firm, and
Joseph Irons, sales manager for
the company, filed opposing
petitions asking that they be
named trustee for the estate of
a missing -person.
McKenna, flying to Seattle,
vanished between Eugene and
Portland, Ore.
LAKE CAMP STAY
Applications for attendance at
the Boy Scout camp at Lake of
the Woods are coming in rapidly
with the advent of good weather
according to word from local
boy scout headquarters. The
camp, one of the finest estab
lished boys camps in Oregon,
will open for the season on
Sunday, June 28. The camp staff
under the direction of Kenneth
Wells, local scout executive will
go into camp on July 1 for a
period of training prior to open
ing of the second period on
July 9.
The camp Is open to all Boy
Scouts in this council area which
includes Jackson and Josephine
and Siskiyou counties and has a
capacity of ninety campers and
counselors.
Considerable impro v e m e n t
was made to the physical plant
last year including kitchen en
largement, new tent frames,
new boats and canoes. Very lit
tle new equipment will be avail
able for this year's camp, but
new items will be added to the
daily program including special
emergency service training work
In physical fitness, fire fighting,
etc.
The camp will operate for
one week periods until August 2
when it will be turned over to
the Medford Girl Scouts for a
three week period.

chicken dinner from 6:30 to 8
p. m. before the recreational
meeting, for a nominal sum.

team on Mrs. John Cola, Mrs.
Frances Tonn, and Geo. Whitney.
A memorial service honored
deceased members.

The Grange
Victory Center will be taken
over Saturday night by the
Baldwin Piano Shoppe's cele
brated Roguettes. The accordian
group .which returned to Med
ford this week from Salem with
honors will perform on the War
Bond platform from 7:30 p. m.
to 8:30 p. m. featuring many of
the numbers they did on the
northern city. The group Is
under the personal direction of
Sebastian Apollo, who will ren
der three selections of. his own.

entertainment for Victory Cen
