At Church Session
"Salute the World" was the
topic discussed by the Adult
Missionary society of the First
Christian church Wednesday
when Mrs. E. B. Cohb opened
the meeting with a musical pre
lude after which Mrs. Julia
Gregory read the poem, "The
Gospel According to You."
Mrs. Ralph Cook led the dis
cussion with Mrs. C. C. Sater
responding with "The Cost of
the Christian Way," and Mrs.
Georgia Burnham asked some
vital questions for Christians to
consider.
A gift was presented to Mrs.
Gregory, retiring president. Mrs.
Nora Ireland had charge of the
Installation 01 new omcers tor
the coming year. Devotions
were led by Mrs. Crisp. Re
freshments were in charge of
Mrs. Theo Sims and groups.

noble grand of Ruth Rebekah
lodge. No. 4 of Jacksonville at
a recent meeting which was con
ducted by Rae Shafer, retiring
noble grand. Ruth Hoffman

tice was held and later a social
hour was conducted by Rae
Shafer and Zola Fick.
A report on the annual as
sembly was heard recently cy
the members, given by Mrs.
Grace Brownlee, who attended
the meeting in Porland. A flag
day program will be given June
15. Members are asked to bring
a poem or skit to the meeting
June 15, as a contribution to the
Flag day program.

in an address on Armageddon.
He began with interesting arch
aeological discoveries made on
the plains of Meggldo, the most
natural battle ground In the
world, where the Canaanities,
Philistines, Egyptians, Chal
deans, Persians, Greeks Ro
mans, Moslems, Jews and Christ
ians have their decisive strug
gles. Tonight he will give the
concluding prophetical message
on the theme "The Future of
the World and the Hope of the
Church". After Sunday night,
Mr. Fife will continue the re
vival with a different line of
sermons, opening next week
with the theme "If I Had Only
One More Week to Live What

charge of organizing Oregon ra
tioning today after five resigna
tions that caused Governor
S prague to charge that working
conditions in the state rationing
administration ' are no longer
agreeable."
May was appointed by Rich
ard G. Montgomery, who be
came director when the OPA re
cently took over rationing
duties.
May will supervise the setting
up of 58 price and rationing
boards planned by the OPA.

L. Price, state rationing execu
tive and former state director;
Albert L. Shellworth, Price's as
sistant; W. S. Dirker, state su
gar rationing administrator, and
O. L. McPherson, Multnomah su
gr rationing chief.
Price blamed personal busi
ness reasons for the resignation.
The others did not comment.
The governor said, "I have
not talked personally to the men,
but I am sure that changed
working conditions caused them
personally to desire not to con
tinue." He did not amplify.

SHUN EDUCATION
TO AVOID DRAFT
Raleigh. N. C. June 6. AP)
J. E. Miller, director of the
state adult education depart
ment, said today that adult edu
cation classes for draftees re
jected because of Illiteracy had
failed In North Carolina.
'The draftees prefer to dodge
the draft rather than to learn
to read and write," he said.
The illiterate youth who is
eager to learn that he might
serve his country Is an unusual
case."
Miller said that 23 school
units in North Carolina have or
ganized classes to teach Illiter
ate draftees but that the reject
ed men were "a little too wise
to go to a school which will pre
pare them to get back Into the
army.
The classes. Miller said, were
abandoned.

Open Vacation Study
Classes On Monday
The vacation church school
for the First Christian church
will begin tomorrow with en
rollment at 6:30 a. m. ind will
continue for two weeks. Classes
and activities are arranged for
boys and girlg from three to IS
years of age. The school will
run from 9 to 11:30 a. m. five
days each week until June 19.
There is no fee charged for
enrollment. The following lead

School of the Bible In Portland
and her assistants, tha school
sessions, which last from 9 a. in
to noon. Monday through Fri
day, will be held for period
of two weeks.
Eligible for enrollment In the
school are all youngsters above
two years of age. Plans have
been made to have classes avail
able for various age groups. The
