The distance from Washington to Richmond by motor Is ap
proximately tha distance from Medford to Dunsmuir, Calif.
Yet the distance In dress, manners, customs, conversation and
point of view la approximately a million-light years, walk around
Richmond after a week In the national capital and you are In a
foreign country, or think you are.

ning, and brushed the faded fedora thereafter, with all the care
bestowed by a mother cat on her newly born offspring, were to
adopt FOR ONE MINUTE the attitude of the average negro bell
hop In the national capital, why he would be hung up to a lamp
post before sundown, or at least EXPECT to be, which Is prob
ably even more important.
And no doubt this striking difference also goes back to the
Civil War (Pahdon sah, the war between the states!) and the fact
that SOUTH of the Mason tt Dixon line they CAN'T forget it, and
north of it they HAVE!
And the colored sexton at Old St. Johns church up on the Broad
Street hill, not of the old generation either, but a young man, oh,
perhaps In his lata thirties.
It was after S p. m. when we reached there, pretty much out of
breath, too, after the long climb, with water fairly running from
the old chapeau lining when we took it off in the presence of so
many venerable headstones, and as the Sexton observed, the church
was closed.
But would we like to step In for a moment, the Sexton would
be delighted to disregard the rules for the venerable pilgrim from
"pahts unknown," and show him Just where Patrick Henry de
livered the famous apostrophe to freedom.
The sexton obviously had learned his piece by heart, but what
a voice! Shades of Paul Robeson! And what dignity, what cour
tesy without servility, we were so Impressed we couldn t bear to
suggest an honorarium, and yet all th trouble he had taken called
for some recognition, ore of those knotty problems one often
meeti in travelling, "to be or not to be. that Is the question!"
We decided in favor cf a tip but (for us) a generous one, and
eventually prepared ourselves for the shock of a stern and
humiliating refusal. Well we mifiht have spared ourselves the
trepidation.
Not only was the offering accepted with a certain alacrity
but the gentleman of color, escorted us through the graveyard,
guided us across the street and hailed the bus for Byrds park, we
were relieved he didn't attempt to help the old Pilgrim inl
We don't fancy graveyards.
But tha Lord willing, think we will take a taxi up there
tomorrow for a more comprehensive survey, an unescorted one.
We have visited various and sundry historical places of revolu
tionary days, particularly in the vicinity of Boston, but never
felt so taken back to the tines of our forefathers LITERALLY
as in this brief excursion. It Is such a simple unassuming church.
Just a wooden affair with a box-board steeple, but whether It was
the sexton's magic voice or what, we did are and feel Patrick
Henry and the Spirit of "76 there, as we have never felt either
before. We still feel It somehow back here In this very charming
and nostalgic hotel, perhaps there will be a repeat tomorrow.
But the bathtub beckons and how we need It so Bon Solr!

What Washington and Oregon
received was a temporary re
prieve from gasoline ratio'ning;
the rationing will be imposed
later when all 48 states are af
fected. The "best minds" agree
that conditions will progress!

shortage of gasoline in the
northwest nor will there by any

supply all the gasoline needs of

States are slow in getting start
ed and none of the synethetic
rubber will be available for the
public as long as the war lasts.
Aside from military require
ments the only rubber will be
for essential purposes, such as
operation of highway trucks,
buses and a limited number of
individuals such as physicians
and police. The time is coming
when private owners will be of
fered a price for their tires by
the government, and if the offer
is refused the tires will be taken
anyway.
Last week traveling salesmen
of the northwest appealed to
OPA for a concession. They
showed the necessity of having
recaps: depicted the hundreds
of miles of travel they must
make to contact their custom
ers and, In brief, informed Leon
Henderson of the exact facts.
Mr, Henderson made a state
ment, saying he recosnized the
plight of the commercial trav
elers, but since the original reg
ulations were promulgated the
rubber situation has become so
grave that rigid restrictions arc
required to make current sup
ply spread as long as possible.
While statesmen are debating
what sort of peace terms will be
demanded more practical offi
cials in the national capital are
worrying about a mass trans
portation problem which is de
veloping and will be a headache
in the northwest before the end
of the year. People moved out
two longer. In every commtin
ity having war Industries there
are hundreds of workers in this
situation. Car pools and car
clubs will gradually fold up as
tires wear out and car bodies

tion prepared its rules explain
ing what is under price control,
the bright young man who
worked on the schedule knew
little or nothing of this specific
crop. Hops are dried, and there
fore under present regulations
they are subject to price control
For the information of hop
growers and dealers of the
northwest it can be stated that
the mistake of OPA will be cor
rected and hops will be taken
out of control in ample time be
fore the new crop is gathered.
OPA is building up a force of
100,000 people on the payroll
and possibly will be under civic
service. OPA intends retaining
local rationing boards, probably
on a volunteer basis, but the
tens of thousands In the regular
organization will supervise the
policing of retailers and whole
salers.

WORKERS in the migratory
labor camps in a half-dozen sec
tions of the Pacific northwest
will be permitted to have all the
gasoline they require to go from
here to there. The manpower
commission (Paul McNutt) is de
sirous of giving these migrants
every consideration which will
enable their valuable service of
gathering the vegetables and
fruits. It has teen proposed
that Mexican labor be brought
in and some of these aliens dis
tributed to the sugar beet fields.
Before any Mexicans are im
ported to supplement the ranks
of labor t'ie prospective em
ployers will be required to
agree on wages and hours.

District Attorney George W.
Neilson stated today he under
stood an application for a parole
for Albert W. Reed, serving a
life term in state prison, would
be made this week to Governor
Charles A. Sprague. Reed was
convicted in March, 1932, for the
slaying of Victor Knott, Ashland
policeman. In November, 1931,
and has served slightly more
than ten years. The slaying oc
curred when Knott and another
Ashland officer attempted to halt
two men, lurking near the En
ders warehouse in Ashland.
Reed was indicted, along with
Paul McQuade and Lee Jackson,
who have never been apprehend
ed. Reed was arrested at Long
mont, Colo., a month after thc-Q
murder, and returned here.
The district attorney reported
two other applications for a pa
role had been denied by previous
governors. He said he under
stood Ashland authorities would
oppose any parole, if a parole
board hearing was called.
