open with vesper musical at
the First Methodist church

week with details of the lecture
appearance here next Monday
evening of James R. Young, for
mer newspaper correspondent
from Japan, who will speak at
the high school auditorium. A
record audience is expected to
hear Mr. Young who has lec
tured in all the major cities of
the country since bis return
from the Orient.
Mr. Young, accompanied by
his wife, will arrive in Medford
Monday morning from San
Francisco. The Youngs will be
guests at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Leonard Carpenter and
Monday afternoon Mr. Young
will be entertained at the home
of Mrs. Harry Holmes. The
Youngs will continue north
Tuesday where Mr. Young is
scheduled to speak In Portland.

SALEMIIES BACK
Salem, April 24 (fP) The
Salem chamber of commerce pro
posal to underwrite a low-cost
bus line between Salem and
Camp Adair was approved al
most unanimously last night at
a mass meeting of Salem busi
nessmen. Carl Hogg, chamber president
said the line would be started
Immediately. He said It is neces
sary for the businessmen to
sponsor the line because bus
companies are not Interested in
the line.
Clay C. Cochran, business ex
tension manager for the cham
ber, predicted that several hun
dred new homes would be built
in Salem if the city were made
a defense housing area. The bus
line would make Salem eligible
for such a designation.
New U-Boat Activity

casts), April 24 (&) The Ger
man high command reported
today that In new U-boat oper
ations off the American east
coast and In the Caribbean six
merchant ships totalling 33,000
tons had been sunk.
One Nazi undersea raider was
said to have sunk a tug and
three barges by gunfire "Just
outside an American port."
