The Jackion County Trailer
Camp on the Crater Lake high
way continue! to grow dally.
Ten more ten houses have been
constructed during the part few
dayi and twenty-five trallerg
arrived at the camp hut week.
Manager Hobart Price expect
peak population of the camp
will be reached sometime next
month and said that existing fa
cilities are ample to take care
of the expected demand.
The Jackson County Recrea
tion committee under the chair
manship of Mrs. Helen Carpen
ter and E. W. Carleton Is arrang
ing a playground program for
the 85 children who live at the
camp. An area has been set
aside for installation of a play
ground for. children of the resi
dents. Several newcomers are bring
ing tents and constructing their
own tent houses. Electricity,
water, garbage collection, laun
dry and ironing rooms, individ
ual showers and sanitary facili
ties are furnished for all resi
dents of the camp and have
been installed in accordance
with recommendations of the
government agencies working
on temporary housing for de
fense workers.
Two-way traffic has been es
tablished on the Crater Lake
highway as far out as the trailer
camp and has materially eased
the traffic problem for residents
of that area.
Women's Auxiliary
for Navy Duly Has
Committal's Okeh
Washington, April 16 (JPi
The house naval committee at
proved legislation today to cre
ate women's auxiliary reserve
in the navy to relieve men for
seagoing duty.
Enlistment would be volun
tary and the age for admission
would be 20 years.
Rep. Shannon (D-Mo) protest
ed that to admit women would
be "wrong", but the committee
approved the measure in less
than SO minutes.
Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs,
chief of the bureau of naviga
tion, told the committee that the
measure was designed to "alle
viate shortages of sea-going men
which promise to become acute
as the ship expansion program
develops."
He said the women volunteers
would be used In communica
tions work for such Jobs as cod
ing and decoding, photographic
work, and in laboratory work.
But, at the same time, he de
clared that ha could "forsee that
before this war is over, we may
be using them in many other
Jobs, such as cooks and so forth
on shore establishments."

closest pals in his former home,
Cayuga, N. D. Captain Lee and
Hnomer lived near each other,
played with each other, and the
former had one of the swellest
cookie Jars "Doc" has aver sam
pled. Max Ilcnne of United Air
lines has agreed to flag down
Captain Lee on his next plane
trip to the coast so the two old
North Dakota lads can have a
talkfest and a "cookie" reunion
in the salubrious Rogue River
valley.

CCC Camp Williams, April 10
(Spl.) The members of Com
pany 6403, CCC, Camp Williams
Creek. Williams, will celebrate
the ninth anniversary of the
civilian conservation corps on
Sunday April 19, with an open
house. The public is invited to
attend and visit the camp from
10 a. m. to 4 p. m. They will
be escorted by members of the
company.
During the last three months
the camp has been engaged in
a war project at Medford, log
ging, milling and framing of
lumber. Approximately 400 000
feet of lumber was sawed at the
mill during January, February
and March with more ordera
anticipated. Enrollees have been
doing a class of work equal to
civilian labor on a commercial
contract.
The principal places of inter
est in Camp Williams Creek
which wtll be shown to the
public are the sawmill, planer
shed, woodworking shop, garage,
blacksmith shop, saw filing shed,
tool room, recreational hall, in'
firms ry, educational building,
barracks, army and technical
service offices.
In addition to the touring of
the camp buildings a aoftbull
game will be played by the en
rollees at 2 o'clock on the local
baseball diamond.

Carelessness Blamed
In Normandie Blaze;
Handling Criticized

A house naval subcommittee
blamed "carelessness and lack
of proper supervision" today for
the fire which damaged the
liner Normandie in New York,
but reported that opportunities
for sabotage were "abundant."
Concluding a two-month In
vestigation, the subcommittee
Issued a long report sharply
critical of government handling
of the big ship and disclosed
that orders had been given for it
to sail on February 14, five days
after it burned and capsized.
Asserting that the tire un
questionably started from sparks
from a blow torch which ignit
ed life preserves, the subcom
mittee said investigation failed
to disclose any persons intent on
acts of sabotage and said the
fire "was not started with will
ful or malicious Intent."
There U no escape from the
conclusion, however, that the
cause and consequences of the
fire are directly attributable to
carelessness and lack of proper
supervision," the report said.

submarines $900,000,000 pro
gram stressing new emphasis on
the sting of the submerslbles in
naval warfare won swift ap
proval today from the house
naval committee.
The action came less than
day after Representative Vinson
(D-Ga ), chairman of the commit
tee, drafted and Introduced the
bill, authorising construction of
scores of the deadly underseas
craft which have wrought heavy
damage to shipping of both al
lied and axis nations.
After listening to testimony
from submarine experts of the
naval department, the commit
tee increased the total author
ized tonnage proposed by Vin
son from 170,000 to 200,000 tons.
He declined to divulge the exact
number ot submarines the total
tonnage would build.
The Virgin islands were
bought from Denmark in 1817
for $25,000,000.
