Swing Into Action
MacArthur has demonstrated
by a dangerous but beautifully
executed . operation that Ameri
ca definitely is swinging Into
action after many disconcerting
set-backs. He has given us an
exhibition of the strategy upon
which we are likely to depend,
or so I believe, to crush the Japanese-war
from the air with a
vast navy of matchless flying
fortresses and fighters.
The C-in-C has proved again
that the Yankee airman is ab
solute tops as a fighter, and that
American warplanes are worthy
of these grand men. He has
shown how, even in these early
stages of the conflict while we
still are in a state of prepara
tion, the widely distributed Jap
anese bases and attenuated com
munications in the southwest
Pacific can be blasted.
Our leader has given Nippon
preview of the day when the
sun over Pagan Tokyo will be
obscured by an armada of
American warplanes, for that is
the way we ultimately shall
enact retribution. When the
Japs stuck a knife in Uncle
Sam's back at Pearl Harbor they
asked for trouble, and they are
going to get their bellies full of

On the whole, this demonstra
tlon of air-power and military
efficiency must be about the
most disconcerting thing which
has happened to the Japanese
since they violated the laws of
civilization in attacking us. At
the same time, it should give the
American public great courage
and confidence, because it em
phasizes again that when the
United States once Is fully
armed, there is nothing on earth
which can stop it
Object Lesson For
Our Allies. Seen
Then there's another possible
lesson In the raid. MacArthur
dared much when he sent those
13 great bombers Into the air.
The operation was so perfectly
executed that the full extent of
the danger is obscured. But he
Is one of those who know that
war is nothing If not a game of
daring, and that nothing venture
Doming have.
It is difficult to escape the
thought that perhaps this raid
may prove to be a fruitful ob
ject lesson. There is a persist
ent feeling and It may not be
without grounds that sometimes
our allied efforts haven't been
daring enough. That's worth
consideration when we are fight
ing a leader like Hitler who
gambles prodigiously all the
time.

Mrs. Alice Moore of the Tal
ent district, has filed a $10,000
damage suit In circuit court
against Thomas V. Magrnth, re
siding near the airport, and B.
J. Gifford and V. Jackson, can
tonment workers, as the result
of an auto accident on the Pa
cific highway, a mile and a half
south of this city, on March 2.
Jackson and Magrath were par
sengcrs.
The complaint cites that an
uto driven by Gifford collided
with one In which the plaintiff
was riding and driven by her
husband.
Mrs. Moore alleges the Gif
ford car was driven in a reck
less and negligent manner, and
she sustained permanent injury
to leg and knee. She Is repre

Selective service registration
on April 27 of men in Jackron
county aged 43 to 64, inclu
sive, who have not previously
registered, will be directed by
the local board chairmen. The
places of registration, not com
pletely determined now, are to
be announced soon and will be
set up in convenient locations
throughout the valley.

fourth registration in compll
ance with the selective training
and setvlce act of 1940 ano
amendments thereto was issued
April 10 by Governor Charles
A. Sprague and rails upon all
public agencies In the state to
aid In making the. registration
complete and effective and asks
employers to give "those under
their charge sufficient time in
which to fulfill the obligations."
Hours for registering are 7 a m.
to 9 p. m.
According to the governor's
l.roclamntlon "the state director
of selective service may author
ize advance registration where
such advance registration is de
sirable." All mall citizens and all men
residing in the continental Unit
ed States, in the territories of
Alaska and Hawaii and in Puer
to Rico 'n the fourth age group
are required to register.
