approximately one-fourth of all
the 219 Japanese ships sunk or ,
damaged by American action
since the war began,.
Naval observers here were
quick to note that the new commander-in-chief
of the - Pacifio
fleet. Admiral Chester W. Nim-
ttz. was an old pigboat man.
and that the increase ot subma
rine successes has been mount
ing sine ha supplsnted Admiral
Husband E. Kimmel. The Japa
nese radio haa been eloquent in
implied tribute to Nlmiu'a abil- -
Ity as an underseas raider.

On several occasions Tokrvo
has broadcast warnings of
American submarines in Japa
nese waters and the Dosslbilitv
of raids on coastal areas.
The unofficial compilation of
the toll taken by American sub
marines wss made after the
navy disclosed details of the
Seawolf s highly successful
crake. It showed that of 21S
enemy vessels sunk, probably
sunk or damaged submarines op
erating from the Indian ocean to
the very Japanese coast have
been credited with 88 sinkings,
12 pn.ba.ble sinkings and 10 at
tacks which resulted in damago . .

The Seawolf wss credited
with the lsrgest number of suc
cessful attacks known to hav
been made by a single American
undersea raider, and naval au
thorities said that IU achieve
