soon, following Dr. Divine's retirement as pastor of the First Pres

las C. Minto, retired hop and
sheep farmer who was born In
Salem 80 years ago, died at his
home here today. He was the
son of John and Martha Minto,
pioneers who came to Salem in
1844.

Ed G. Boehnke, of Eugene,
Republican candidate for the
new fourth district in congress,
spent the week-end In Medford,
meeting old friends and new
ones and surveying the general
political situation in southern
Oregon.
Mr. Boehnke has always been
very active In the Republican
party in this state, and has a
wide acquaintance from the
Columbia river to the Slskiyous,
which encourages him to be
lieve he will come out ahead
In the contest for the GOP
nomination.
Hla ballot slogan will be:
"All-out effort for victory, ac
tive, Intelligent representative
for fourth district."
Mr. Boehnke has been In the
commercial printing business in
Eugene for many years, and
also had extensive newspaper
experience in his native state
of North Dakota.
It is expected his chief op
ponent In the primaries will be
Harris Ellsworth, editor of the
News Review of Roseburg.

p. m. tomorrow at the armory.
O. II. Bengtson, Jackson county
sheriff g posse captain, said to
day. The 89-man unit is being
formed In compliance with the
request of Col. Ralph P. Cow
gill, commander of the Oregon
state guard, for use In surround
ing woods and mountains In time
of emergency. Troopmen must
be between the ages of 20 and
64. No physical exam is re
quired. Major C. Y. Tengwald and
Captains Moore Hamilton and
J. W. Grigsby of the state guard
will attend the meeting to help
outline plans for the troop. A
platoon will be organized at
Medford and Ashland first and
later at Grants Pass.

a two-car collision fatally Injured
John Pfenning, 31, Portland.

PASSESAT TRAIL
Charles A. Fotller, 88 and
long time resident of the Trail
district, passed away at his home
there at 8:30 a. m. Saturday.
He was born at Kanechbach,
Baden, Germany, September 14.
1855. and came to the United
States in 1881, and 44 years ago
came to Oregon and settled at
Trail where he has since re
sided. He leaves one sister, Mrs.
Caroline Johnson of Shady Cove
and several nieces and nephews.

were held at the graveside In
Shady Cove cemetery at 2 p. m.
