Reception for Divines
To Mark Termination
Of Local Pastorate
Rev. Sherman Landon Divine, D. D., will be tendered a pub
lic reception In the social hall of the Presbyterian church Wednes
day evening. In recognition of the termination of his six year's
pastorate here.
A native son of Michigan, Dr.
Divine was born in Holly, Octo
ber 17, 1876, took his B. A. de
gree at Alma College in 1898 and
. his B. D. at McCormick Theolog
ical Seminary in 1901. He has
held pastorates in Morgan Park
and Chicago, 111., Marinette, Wis.,
Detroit, Mich., Bozeman, Mont.,
Spokane, Wash., Rochester, N.
Y Sacramento, Cal., Olympla
and Seattle, Wash., and Medford,
Oregon.
As a builder of churches Dr.
Divine is nationally known.
While still a student pastor in
Michigan he built churches at
' Omena and Suttons Bay and
during his important pastorates
in Detroit and Sacramento, new
edifices were erected through
his tireless and skillful efforts.
Dr. Divine married Mary Inei
Nye of Detroit in 1901. They
have two sons and a daughter.
He was a member of the exec
utive committee of the General
Assembly of the Presbyterian
church of the U.S.A. (1916-20).
and a member of the Washing
ton Arbitration board in 1936.
He was chaplain of the senate
of California (1931-32) and held
. the similar position in the sen
ate of Washington State (1933).
Among his outstanding secu
lar activities have been: Conserv
ation directo r of the national
(1916-18); intermountain chair
man of the Near East Relief
. food administration under Hoov-
' er in the state of Washington,
(1918-23); chairman of the Near
East Relief Commission to Rus
sia, Turkey and Greece, (1921);
active membership in the Rotary
clubs of Spokane, Rochester,
Sacramento, and Olympia; pres
ident of the Oregon State, and
of the local chapter of the So
ciety of the Sons of the Ameri
can Revolution (1940-41); trustee
of Whitworth College (1915-26).
Dr. Divine has long been ac
tive in Masonic work. He is a
Knights Templar and has also
received the thirty-second degree
in the Scottish Rite branch with
the honorary degree, the Knights
Commander Court of Honor. In
1916 the College of Montana
conferred upon him the honor
ary degree of Doctor of Divin
ity, and Whitworth College gave
that of Doctor of Laws' in 1923.
He was trustee of the latter col
I lege from 1915-26.
Twice Dr. Divine has been
around the world; once as the
guest of his Detroit parishoners
in token of their appreciation of
his labors in financing their new
church building, and a second
time in connection with the Near
- East Relief Commission.
Dr. Divine came to Medford
when the church was heavily in
debt and leaves it with a debt
of only $12,000 in bonds. Under
his leadership membership of the
church has been greatly increas
ed. He has been Moderator of the
Presbytery of Oregon and a
faithful worker. Having reached
the age of retirement from ac
tive ministry he has tendered his
resignation from the pastorate of
the church, effective April 17,
and it has been accepted with a
sincere expression of apprecia
tion of his excellent and faith
ful work here. Dr. Divine and
a his wife will be greatly missed
from the life of the community.
It is expected that many Jackson
county friends will attend the
farewell reception next Wednes
day evening.
SWIFT APPROVAL
ARMY PAY BOOST

Swift house approval of a bill
doubling the $21 a month basic
pay for army buck privates was
forecast today as the military
affairs subcommittee prepared
to open hearings on it Tuesday
The measure, already unani
mously approved by the senate,
would grant pay increases for
all enlisted men in both army
and navy.
There were Indications that
an effort would be made to
attach a rider to the bill, mak
ing financial provision for de
pendents of men In the service.

House ways and means com
mittee members said today that
any administration request for
an increase in its seven billion
dollar tax program would make
some form of a sales tax certain.
Discussing reports that Presi
dent Roosevelt might revise
sharply upward his tax request
as a means to help control infla
tion, the committeemen said
that in that case some kind of
consumer tax already endorsed
by a majority could not be
avoided.
Secretary Morgenthau said re
cently he was standing by his
request for $7,610,000,000 more
revenue, "until there is a public
announcement by the president"
of a change in the estimate.
"Any increase would make a
sales tax inevitable," said Rep.
Knutson (R., Minn.) and he was
joined by Representatives Tread
way (R.t Mass.) and Disney (D.,
Okla.)
Most ' of the committeemen
have said that in no event could
congress take more than $3,000,
000,000 additional from indi
viduals and an equal amount
from corporations. Those two
proposals formed the basis for
Morgenthau's program present
ed to congress on March 3.
Chairman Doughton (D., N. C.)
has expr.t sed preference for a
manufacturers sales tax, if any
such levy were to be made. But
witnesses have testified that
such a form would lead to end
less pyramiding of the tax, with
the ultimate consumer price
much higher than the amount
imposed.
AGED MAN SOUGHT

The Kitsap county sheriffs of
fice today issued a state-wide
request that James S. Williams
70, be detained for questioning
in connection with the slaying
of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lil
lian Williams, 57, at the Wil
liams home at Fragaria.
An autopsy disclosed two rifle
bullet wounds, in the chest and
back. Her husband, Winston
niinams, fuget sound navy
yard shipfitter, who found her
dead in their home early yes
terday, identified a note nearby
as having been written by his
father.
The note said the elder Wil
liams would be found dead, but
a widespread search failed to
disclose his whereabouts.

in nutrition under the auspices
of the Red Cross volunteer serv
ice will be formed this week,
it was announced today by Mrs.
R. W. Sleeter, chairman of the
Red Cross canteen corps and
nutrition groups. Registration
for the classes will take place
Monday and Tuesday from 10
a. m. until 4 p. m. at the county
agent's office in the courthouse.
