hearings for nine civil
ians and a Fort Lewis corporal
charged in federal court with
the theft of government proper
ty from nearby army camp to
day brought out several accusa
tions of food graft and wastage
on the part of military person
nel from the prisoners.
Corporal Ferdinand Dekok of
Fort Lewis, and nine citizens of
Olympia, were charged yester
day by federal officers and
brought to Tacoma charged
with stealing ammunition from
an unnamed army camp.
Many of the civilians come
from well known families In
Olympia.
The nine civilian defendants
admitted their guilt, but Dekok
declared he did not steal the
ammunition. He said It was
turned over to him by two sup
ply sergeants. "Everybody in
Olympia seemed to be getting
ammunition but I didn't know
where they got it."
'This seems to be something
like the recent garbage mess out
there," said Commisaiuner Fitch,
referring to arrests of a number
of soldiers and civilian garbage
collectors in connection with
the theft of food supplies sev
eral months ago.
Vaughn Isom, one of the de
fendants, said "I've seen perfect
ly good turkeys stuffed and
everything, dumped from the
Fort Lewis garbage trucks into
pig pens."
