The federal bureau of Investiga
tion cracked down hard today
on the "careless disregard and
wilful violation" of the select
ive service act and ordered the
arrest of 1,000 northern Calif or-
nlans It accused of varied violations.
It was the most hardbolled
and widespread action taken In
California since the selective
servict act then the first
peacetime draft law was pass
ed by congress In 1040.
"Although delinquent regis
trants nave been given numer
ous warnings In the past to con
tact their local draft boards to
clear up their delinquencies,
various draft boards have en
countered hundreds of cases
wherein there have been either
careless disregard or wilful vio
lations of the selective service
act," said Nat J. L. Pieper, head
of the FBI field office here.
Many Is Bay Area
Bulk of the asserted viola
tions were In the San Francisco
bay area and In and around
Sacramento. Pieper estimated
"well over 1,000" complaints
would be filed and warrants
Issued. Under provisions of the
FBI plan for national defense,
local police were making the
arrests. Persons arrested will be
held for criminal prosecution In
the federal district court.
In previous action against
violators of tha draft law, steps
have been taken against only a
few at a time In scattered sec
tions of the state. This is the
first time any such large num
ber has been ordered arrested.
KANSAS SCHOOLS COLD'

and will be a civilian defense
program. The lecture has asked
the program be presented at
8 o'clock and open to the public
and all are urged to attend.

The treasury reported today
that defense bond sales dropped i
sharply in Marcn, aggregating
$564,506,281, compared with
$710,337,192 In February.
Officials said the drop prob
ably was due to the fact that
many people had no money left
for bond purchases after they
paid their income taxes.
The cucumber probably was
first grown in northern India.
