Weds Mr. Kendall
In Church Rites
Miss Harriet Lee Sparrow,
daughter of Mrs. Alex Sparrow,
of Kirtland Farm and Clinton
DeWitt Kendall were married
this morning at 9:30 o'clock by
the Rev. Herald G. Gardner, in
St. Mark's Episcopal church In
the presence of the immediate
family and a few friends..
The bride chose for her wed
ding outfit a beige silk crepe
dress with touches of green, a
green hat and a corsage of pur
ple stocks and sweetpeas.
Immediately following the
ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Kendall
left for Oakland, Cal., where
they will make their home.
Prior to her marriage Mrs.
Kendall was honored with nu
merous social events by her
friends in the valley. Among
the affairs were a bridge and
shower March 20, with Mrs.
Robert Emmens as hostess at
the home of her mother, Mrs. A.
H. Miller on South Holly street;
a shower by members of the
Colony club March 24 and a
dessert bridge and shower
March 25 with Mrs. Fitzhugh
Brewer and Mrs. Harvey Rob
ertson aas hostesses at the home
of the former on East Main
street.

To Attend Meeting '
Mrs. Bertha Andresen of Olym
pia. Wash., national vice-president
of the American Legion
auxiliary will attend the district
conference to be held in Med
ford Monday. Mrs. Polly Mc
Inturff, state president, Mrs.
Bernice Beard, district presi
dent, both of Marshfield; Mae
Whiteomb, state secretary of
Portland, and Mrs. Dorothy
Templar, state treasurer, of
Klamath Falls, will accompany
Mrs. Andresen.
Units of Roseburg, Grants
Pass, Kerby, Medford, Ashland,
Klamath Falls. Malin, Merrill
and Lakeview will be represent
ed at this conference which will
be held in the Girls Commu
nity clubhouse beginning at 1:30
p. m. Reports of activities of
the units will be presented by
their presidents and talks given
by the state and national of
ficers.
The members of the auxiliary
will join the American Legion
at dinner at the Medford hotel
at 6 p. m. Reservations for the
dinner must be made not later
than Saturday by telephoning

Former Resident
To Present Concert
Friends of Miss Helen Judy,
a former Medford girl, have re
ceived word that she will be in
Medford, April 7, at which time
she will give a concert in the
First Baptist church.
Miss Judy has been residing
In Chicago for the past three
years where she has been study
ing voice under Philip Manual.
At present she is visiting in
Eugene at the home of her par

2:30 p. m. with educational films

Eight Navy Mothers and a
visitor enjoyed a meeting with
Mrs. Maude Culbertson Wednes
day at which time lunch was
served followed by an afternoon
of sewing. Navy mothers are
urged to meet at the corner of
Sixth and Bartlett streets Mon
day at 6:45 p. m. in order to
participate in the "Total War
Day" parade. Those having uni
forms are asked to wear them.

Lions, Auxiliary
Enjoy Dinner
At Grigsby Home
, Medford Lions and auxiliary
were guests at a no-host dinner,
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
James Grigsby, at Jacksonville,
Wednesday evening.
Following the dinner, the
Lions held a brief business
meeting and voted to contribute
$20 to the current China relief
fund, which provides a certifi
cate designating the club a
"grandparent" to one Chinese
child for a year with provision
for complete maintenance for
that length of time.
The meeting marked the fare
well attendance of Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Marti, active members of
their clubs, who are leaving for
Oakland, Calif., April 4, where
Mr. Marti will head the newly
formed furniture division of the
Western Auto Supply Co., for
the Oakland district.
Following the meeting an
evening of cards was enjoyed.

postponed until a later date,
those in charge announced today.
Charles William Termstrom,
said to be a cantonment worker,
charged with operating a motor
vehicle while under the influ
ence of intoxicating liquor, was
fined $100 in city court this
morning and sentenced to 30
days in jail. His operator's li
cense was revoked one year.
Police said that Termstrom
crashed into the rear of a ma
chine driven by William Cecil
Strahan, Rogue River, on North
Riverside avenue yesterday af
ternoon but failed to stop. He
was halted north of town later.
Damage to the Strahan ma
chine was reported as minor.
Termstrom s jail sentence was
to be suspended upon payment
of the fine.
Pendleton, April 2. Pendle
ton will test the efficiency of
its 650 civilian defense workers
and the reaction of its towns
people in an imaginary air raid
Sunday, April 12.
The first yellow alert will be
flashed at 2:30 p. m., and the
blue alert at 2:52. Eight min
utes later the air raid sirens will
sound, air raid wardens will
take their posts, emergency fire
men and policemen and all other
civilian defense workers will
swing into action.
Townspeople will be guided to
curbs and shelters, traffic on the
state highway through the city
will be slowed to 10 miles an
hour and civilians in houses will
carry out instructions contained
in booklets distributed this
week. The test raid will last
approximately one hour, after
which emergency workers will
report their results to County
Coordinator C. L. Lieuallen and
his staff.
Civilian Defense Activities
Jackson County Council of
Defense urgently requests that
all persons in Jackson county
serving or who have served on
observation posts be present at
the parade Monday at 7 p. m..
Army day. The parade will
terminate at Senior high school
football stadium, where we wish
to give public recognition of the
fine service given by these peo
ple. Your presence will be ap
preciated and you will benefit
by the incendiary bomb and
first aid demonstration.
Booklets Ready
A meeting was held last night
with the air raid wardens of the
Medford precincts for discussion
of distribution of the official
instruction booklets prepared by
the State Civilian Defense. This
booklet will give each house
holder all of necessary instruc
tions to protect themselves and
their property. We ask home
owners to cooperate with the
air raid wardens as much as
possible In expediting this dis
tribution. Instruction will (ok
low by trained instructor! in
each precinct in the cities of
Jackson county and in the rural
districts.

The recent naval battle off
Java la believed to have taken
the life of Steve West, a Med
ford youth who was serving as
a torpedoman on the U. S. De
stroyer Edsel.
Steve's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth
Barshaw of 531 Marie street,
received official notice from the
navy department this week that
the Edsel had been missing since
the battle and was presumed to
be lost with all its crew.
Steve received all his school
ing in Medford and was espe
cially well-known by members
of the Rogue Valley Golf club,
where he caddied for several
years in the late 1920's and early
1930's. After serving one hitch

he enlisted for another term
shortly before the outbreak of
war.
Besides his mother he is sur
vived by a brother LeRoy West.
former local resident now em
ployed In San Rafael. Calif., who
is at present visiting relatives

CANADIAN COMMANDOS
TRAIN FOR CAMPAIGN

commandos, making specially
constructed boats, is being train
ed to take part in combined
army-navy air force operations,
Captain R. I. Agnew, command
