The New Orleans States said
today that a ship had arrived
here to undergo repairs for a
damaged bow received some
time ago when it rammed and
sank a submarine in the Carib
bean while voyaging to New
Orleans with light cargo and
without lights.
The submarine, crashed while
running on the surface, was re
portedly cut in two, the ship's
i lookout asserting he saw two
men thrown clear and swim
ming in the water.
Fear of other subs In the
vicinity and speed of the vessel
prevented any attempt to rescue
survivors, the States said.

Spring Pot Roast of Fancy Thorndike

3- to 4-pound S small onions
blade pot roast 6 stalks celery
1 teaspoon salt 6 carrots, halved
1 tablespoon S potatoes, halved
Worcestershire 1 teaspoon salt
sauce Paprika
Vi cup water
Have meat cut 1 to 2VS inches thick. Season
with I teaspoon salt and brown on both aides
in hot fat in Dutch oven. Add Worcestershire
sauce and water. Cover and cook slowly until
tender. 1 to 2 hours. Place 'potatoes at center of
meat, arrange ether vegetables diagonally from
center, spoke-fashion. Baste with stocki add re
maining salt) sprinkle with paprika. Cover and
eeok 33 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
Drain stock and make gravy) pour over meat and
vegetables. Serve in Dutch oven.

1 teaspoon 1 can tomato sauce
minced onion 1 teaspoon dry
1 beaten egg mustard
Vt cup milk cup hot water
Combine meats, onion, egg. milk, and
crumbs. Pack in greased 8-inch square pan. Bake
la moderate oven (3S0 deg.) 30 minutes. Pour off
excess fat. Baste with combined remaining in
gradients. Continue baking 4S minutes. Serves
