W. M. (Jack) Bartlett of Port
land, state director of the Pub
lic Work Reserve, a federal
works agency, described to
Wednesday noon's Lion club
luncheon-meeting in the Hotel
Medford the plan of the reserve
to launch a public Improve
ments program following the
war to assist in cushioning the
deflationary conditions ex
pected.
Mr. Bartlett said that tenta
tive plans of the reserve, design
ed to prevent a recurrence of
the acute miscarriage of econ
omy of the last depression, in
cluded a program of reforesta
tion, road and bridge building
and power manufacturing.
The state body, he explained,
will cooperate with county and
city sub-divisions to analyze the
betterment needs, plan in de
tail for permanent improvi
ments and avoid mistakes.
In Oregon, he said, improve
ment is possible in agriculture
and education. The state con
tributes less money for educa
tion than any other in the
country, he stated, and pointed
out that six out of every 10
high school students received
no religious Instruction and the
grade school students even less.
Paul R. Washke spoke brief
ly on his mission to Medford in
behalf of civilian defense.

This request, unusual as It
may seem, is not impossible un
der the cooperative system es
tablished by Haverford, Swarth
more and Bryn Mawr colleges,
with complete coordination of
the facilities of the three insti
tutions now an established fact
including the exchange of
professors.
The coordinating system was
set up in the interest of econ
omy and a broadening of the
curriculum at each of the three
schools. It is also expected to
alleviate the problem of teach
er replacements created by gov
ernment calls for research ex
perts. Haverford is headed by Dr.
Felix Morley, Swarthmore by
John W. Nason, and Bryn
Mawr, a girls' school, by Mar
ion Edwards Park. The three
educators established the coop
erative system after conferences
in which the individual prob
lems of the schools were found
to be almost identical.

commander of the beleaguered
American and Filipino forces
on the Bataan peninsula, was
nominated by President Roose
velt today to be a lieutenant
general.
Wainwright had been serving
as second in command to Mac
Arthur and then took full charge
of the defense of the peninsula

nila bay when MacArthur was
ordered to Australia to become
supreme commander of united
nations forces in the southwest
Pacific. He is a native of Walla
Walla.

nard Church tower 142 feet Into
the air and when the finishing
touches are completed there
will be room for 1.000 people
to worship in a monument to
the simple faith of a simple

The people of this community
both paid for and built the
church through their own ef
forts. They raised money by
means of annual four-day pic
nics. When they bad sufficient
money, work on the building
progressed, each member of the
community contributing his
share.

N. S.. and shipped in fisher
men's schooners whenever the
boats were available.
