Bed Cross women's motor
corps for volunteer special serv
ices is being organized. Mrs.
Jack Morrill has been appointed
captain Mrs. Corbin Edgell, ad
jutant, and Mrs. Qordon Green,
lieutenant.
For the benefit of those Inter
ested In enrolling in the motor
corps an information desk is to
be located on the mezzanine of
the Hotel Medford for the rest
of the week from 10 a. m.
until 4 p. m. daily. Enrollment
probably will begin at the close
of the week.
Those in charge pointed out
it is necessary for enrollees to
have their own car and furnish
gasoline. They must have taken
or take a first aid course and
also complete a required course
in motor mechanics, the latter
being organized soon.
Other requirements Include
age, 20-50, must agree to give
required number of hours serv
ice a year, furnish two character
references, doctor's certificate of
health, hold an automobile driv
er's license, carry in her car a
first aid kit, pledge herself to
respond willingly and promptly
to calls for service in connection
with the corps; drive carefully
and alertly and know and com
ply with traffic rules and rcgu-

PIT RIVER BRIDGE
Redding, Calif., March 16.
(AP) A 40-car Southern Pacific
freight train rolled along track
suspended 500 feet above the
canyon-walled Pit river yester
day, and so inaugurated service
over the highest double deck
bridge in the world.
The train, which also for the
first time covered the 30 miles of
new mainline track from Delta
to Redding, crossed over the
lower deck of the bridge. The
upper level, four lanes wide, will
carry highway traffic when its
approaches are completed, prob
ably by summer.
Both the bridge, 3.588 feet
long, and the road and railway
relocation projects are by-products
of Shasta dam. The old
routes, deep In the canyon, will
be flooded by the water dam will
retain.

sent a song written by members
of the class.

ASSESSED FINES
Nine logging truck drivers,
charged with operating on the
Crater Lake highway with over
loads, entered pleas of fuilty in
justice court last Saturday and
were fined a flat rate of $2.50
and costs amounting to $4.50,
and an additional 10 per cent
'of the amount of their overload,

pounds. It was $19.30. Next

The complaints were filed
after weight agents of the state
highway commission operated
for several days on the Crater
Lake hishway. It was reported
that if nltfht hauling continued
weight agents would check the
drivers, both night and day.
State and county authorities

gave his home address as Dufur,
Ore., was to be arraigned in jus
tice of the peace court this after
noon on a charge of burglariz
ing the Anderson Thrift store,
710 South Riverside avenue,
about midnight Sunday,
Arrested by city police at the
corner of 12th street and South
Central avenue, Morgan alleg
edly admitted in a signed state
ment that he stole $6.50 in food
stamps, a $5 defense stamp and
a one dollar bill from the cash
register, and a pair of leather
gloves, a carton of cigarettes, a
tooth brush, a tube of tooth
paste and several packages of
gum.
Morgan said in his alleged
confession that he came to Med
ford Saturday night. He said he
effected entrance to the market
by prying the screen and pad
lock off the front door with an
iron bar he found near the rail
road tracks.
Robert William Speer, 21,
another transient taken into cus
tody with Morgan, was being
held for investigation. Morgan
said he gave Speer the carton
of cigarettes, telling him he pur
chased it.
Federal Income Tax

The deadline fell for first pay
ments on the federal income tax
today and J. W. Maloney, col
lector of internal revenue, pre
dicted an almost trebled return
in Oregon.
He said 122,983 persons filed
reports last year, paying $7,100,
000 in taxes. He estimated 250.
000 would file this year, paying
between $20,000,000 and $30,
000,000. Most fish are either dead or
dying when found on their
backs; the catfish of the African
swamps is an exception as it
will swim upside down.

Vern Van Dyke of Lamport's

Salem, March 16. (AP) Sec
retary of State Earl Snell warn
ed today that 5 p. m., March 30,
is the deadline for filing of can
didates and statements for the
voter's pamphlet for the May 15
primary election.
Oregon voters will nominate
candidates for one U. S. senator,
four congressmen, governor, sec
retary of state, superintendent of
public instruction, labor commis
sioner, and three supreme court
justices.
In addition, they will nomi
nate 11 circuit Judges, 10 district
attorneys, 15 state senators, and
all 60 state representatives.
SABOTAGE THEORY EYED
