AIRPORT CANTEEN
SPACE;
NEEDED
Demands made upon tha little
canteen at Medford municipal
airport have so steadily exceeded
its capacity that only a new
building or an addition to tbt
present ene can fill the acute
need, the committee in charge
finally acknowledged yesterday.
The canteen is now housed in
the tiny radio building once used
by the army and it has proved
entirely too small, the committee
has found, to serve the needs of
the many weary pilots and crew
members who are ready at all
times to sacrifice their lives in
defense of their country. Often
a hot cup of coffee or a brief
nap on a plain but comfortable
cot means the difference be
tween fatigue and fresh energy,
the committee pointed out.
The committee has been study
ing the question for weeks, hop
ing first to procure additional
quarters in the administration
building and then to get tne
United Air Lines office when it
moves to its new building but
all to no avail. Always some
other agency had a prior claim.
So yesterday Mrs. Alfred S.
V. Carpenter, chairman of the
recreation committee of the
Jackson County Council of De
fense, announced that the com
mittee had come to the conclus
ion that something had to be
done now for the fighting air
men of the army and navy and
that to accomplish this end a
small sum of about $2,000 would
have to be sought by popular
subscription to enlarge the pres
ent canteen building.
Regardless of whether the
army establishes its own mess at
the airport, the canteen will still
be urgently needed, especially
for a lounge where the tired avi
ators may relax, where they may
sleep, or read, write or listen to
phonograph records before con
tinuing their perilous missions,
Mrs. Carpenter emphasized.
Anyone interested in the mat
ter was invited to stop in and
talk it over with Mrs. Carpenter
who, beginning Tuesday, will
have an office at 225 Medford
Center building.
W. H. Fluhrer, head of the
Fluhrer Bakeries, has agreed to
take charge of the fund subscrip
tion, Mrs. Carpenter said. She
added that there are now four
volunteer workers at the canteen
at all times, instead of one as at
the beginning. The canteen opens
at 7 a.m. and remains open until
the last man has been served,
usually between 8 and 10 p.m.
