"You want the truth the abso

"I certainly do. I won't be sat

absolute truth."
'Then here It Is. If I had my
life to live over again, I'd marry
that man to quickly he wouldn t

Dorcas caught her breath. "I'd

"Well, what are you going to do

"You'U know tomorrow when

"Lavinia Prentiss, don't you

Aunt Dorras.
"Suspense is good for one," said
Lavinia. "Good-bye, Aunt Dor

stood looking down at Rod. She
thought of him as he must have
been in Dunkirk She remem

He heard her, and turned. He
got up.
"Nothing wrong, I hope," be
aid.
"No," said Lavinia. "Every,
thing's lovely."
"For you, maybe," said Rod.
"But not for me. I suppose you
told your aunt you were going
back to Armworth'a."
Lavinia shook her head. "No, I

"Try me once more."
"Lavinia, will you marry me?"
"Yes, Rod, darling."
"Good lord, do you mean It?"
"Of course I mean It," said La
vinia. "I never joke about serious
matters."
Rod caught her to him. "Dear
estdearest," he said, his lips
gainst her cheek.
"You have Aunt Dorcas to
thank," Lavinia said.
"How do you mean?"
"Aunt Dorcas has always been
the biggest influence in my life."
Lavinia smiled: she held Rod off
and looked at him. "I've always
wanted to be just like her. And
now I'm being just like she'd like
to be."
"Doesn't make sense," said Rod,
"as you tell it."
"Of course It doesn't," said La
vinia. "But one shouldn't be sen
sible when one's in love or
should one?"
"No," said Rod. "One should be
happy and nothing more."
Lavinia snuggled against him.
"When one is in love well, one
lust doesn't think." How long ago
it seemed that Zoe had said those
words. And now here she sCood

that Zoe had spoken the truth.
"Rod."
"Yes. Lavinia."
"Do you mind very much get
ting married in the Little Church
Around the Corner?"
"Certainly not if that's what
you wish."
"I don't care so much for my
self," said Lavinia. "But vou see
Aunt Dorcas just loves a church
wedding."
Rod laughed. "God bless Aunt
Dorcas," he said.
"And one more thing. Rod."
"Yes. darling."
"Do you like bears?"
"Bcsrs? What sort of bears?"
"I mean bears in the shape of
rugs fur rugs."
sOf course I like them. Why?"
' "Because I'd like to take a bear
skin rug out to Michigan with us.
It's the skin off a bear my Aunt
Dorcas shot."
"Take It by all means," said
Rod.
"Thanks, darling " Lavinia
sighed. "It will serve as a sort of
of link between my life with
you and the life I might have
lived in a jungle."
"You blessed little Idiot!" said
Rod. And then: "Did Aunt Dor
cas really shoot the bear?"
"She did," said Lavinia. "And
then what do you suppose she
did?"
"Shot another one."
"No, Rod, she fainted."
"Now, listen Lavinia," said
Rod, "you can't convince me that
Aunt Dorcas did a thing like
that."
"All right, have It your way,
darling." Lavinia lifted her face.
"Let's forget Aunt Dorcas and
her bears for a moment while
you kiss me again."

OLD SCHOOL
Manuel Queson, born at Belar. Luion, in 1879, took up the study of law at the University of
Santo Tomas in 1898. He would probably have continued except that a native revolution
against Spain broke out that year. Santo Tomas was founded by the Dominicans early in
the 17th century, and was declared a royal university in 1645. Until the present war it still
existed the oldest university under the stars and stripes.
