Housing Shortage Visloned
By Coordinator When
Cantonment Work Starts
Frank J. Van Dyke, coordin
ator of the cantonment civilian
coordinating board, said today
that federal agencies encourage
the immediate addition of
room or two and the conversion
of spare rooms to the use of
cantonment workers.
This way of helping to solve
the expected housing problem is
favored by the government over
new construction so as to avert
a surplus of dwellings after the
housing need has passed, Mr.
Van Dyke said.
The coordinator stated that
It Is now evident there, will be
an acute housing shortage dur
ing the period of cantonment
construction. There is an ex
pectation that about 3,500 work
ers will come here in the first
ten-day construction period and
that the number of workers will
reach a peak of 9,000, he said.
It was reasonable to anticipate
that the first rush of workers
will arrive early In February
he added. Workers already are
filtering in, he said inquiries
about housing indicated.
Demand Seen Now
There is a noticeable demand
for housing now, Mr. Van Dyke
said in urging everyone with
houses, apartments or rooms to
rent to list them immediately
with the housing registration of
fice, in the tourist bureau at
North Riverside avenue and
Fifth street. A telephone, 4012.
has been installed and a girl em
ployed solely to keep tabs on
places for rent, he added.
It is Important, Mr. Van Dyke
emphasized, that landlords and
apartment house managers not
ify the registration office im
mediately upon renting a place
so that inquirers will not be
sent out to places already rent
ed. He' asked full cooperation
in keeping the records up to
date so that his office might
be of greatest service to both
the landlords and the applicants
for housing.

At its annual meeting yester
day afternoon the First Federal
Savings It Loan association
pledged Itself to do its part in
whatever capacity called upon
to attain, victory.
The present war situation, R.
F. Kyle, secretary-manager said
in his annual report, "means
that every savings and loan as
sociation, along with every other
business, must think first of its
obligation to the victory pro
gram. As events unfold we shall
be shown many ways in which
we can serve the country which
are not now apparent With the
assurance of the full support of
all members, we pledge that the
association will do its part in
whatever capacity that may be."
Mr. Kyle's report said that
one of the useful contributions
the association was now making
was promoting and selling de
fense savings bonds, unis pro
gram, he said, la absorbing a
large part of the association's
effort and has taken preference
over the procurement of savings
accounts. -
The contribution which every
citizen can make In this war is
to save rather than to spend,"
Mr. Kyle's report said. "In the
larger sense, the postponement
of spending, whether by the way
of savings bonds or other sav-
ings channels, Is a move toward '
victory."
Mr. Kyle, said in his report 1
that the association in 1941 had
prosperous year of service to
this community." The past year,
he added, saw a growing popu- .
larity of real estate, "our basic
security as an Investment." He
foresaw a greater demand for
'our financing service" than !
ever before.

The play, entitled "Coveralls,"
was written by Don Elser.
"Coveralls", under direction
of Miss Isa belle Miller, Is a fast
moving three-act comedy. The
plot opens with the annual ma
yor elections In a small town,
complications arise when the
would-be mayor loses his voice
the evening ha is to give hit
campaign speech over the radio.
His daughter finds herself help
lessly in love with boy disap
proved by her parents, and the
son of the politician, age IS, has
eloped with a spoiled young girl

be mayor, Frank Richey; his socially-ambitious
