BY NELSON WINS
E
72-Hole Score of 274 Gives
Nelson First Victory
10 Years of Trying.
in
By Russell Nawland
Oakland, Calif., Jan. 18 (AP)
He took ten years to do it, but
Byron Nelson finally won Call
fornia golf tournament
The shot specialist from To
ledo, O., had acknowledged the
p' audits given a national open
and P. G. A. champion, but for
the first time since he turned
professional in 1932 he came up
yesterday with the major prize
in a uaiiiornla tournament
He won the 72 hole Oakland
open with a par-battering 274.
There wasn't the shadow of a
doubt as to who the best man
was this time. Nelson led from
start to finish.
Dawson Second
After a three under par in the
opening round, a stroke better
than any rival, he added three
successive 69 s to finish five
shots ahead of the field. The
onl other player to subdue par
35-3570 for the Sequoyah
course over the four rounds was
at. amateur, John Dawson of
Hollywood, who turned out
neat 279. '
Trailing Nelson In the money
winning division were Lawson
Little, San Francisco, and Chan
d.er Harper, Portsmouth, Va.,
tied at 280. Each collected f 859.
Stroke behind were the pre
tournament favorite, Ben Hogan
of Hershey, Pa., Lloyd Manrrum
oi Monterey Park, Calif., and
Willie Goggln, White Plains,
N. Y. They deadlocked at 281
and each received $373.

Fans are ready to concede It's Astoria against the field
the annual Oregon high school basketball championship.
The flying fishermen have not
lost to a high school opponent
since they won the state title
last March. The University of

Last week they polished off

of Portland, 43-24. On this
week's menu are Seaside and

Astoria may encounter stiff
opposition from Tillamook, a
district rival. The Cheesemakera

early in the month, 38-27. Last
week-end Tillamook defeated
McMinnville, one of the Willam

There was a growing suspicion
that the University of Washing

and everybody can get down to

The myth of Washington's Ju

too much like a myth-breaker be
fore. The score was 54 to 35, and
practically everybody but Wash

Idaho sprang last week's other
surprise, also Saturday night, by
showing how to beat a cham
