Women of Jackson county will
complete arrangements for "all
out" participation In the pro
gram Intended to make Oregon
the first state In the union to in
augurate a house-to-house can
vass of "womanpower," to be
available for employment in of
fice, factory and field when
and if an acute labor shortage
develops as the result of men
being drawn into heavy defense
industries and military services.
A county-wide mass meeting
of all women's organizations,
clubs, auxiliaries and other
groups will be held in the court
house auditorium on January 28
at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Sadie Orr
Dunbar, state director of the
Oregon board for Mobilization
of Women and honorary presi
dent of the General Federation
of Women's clubs, will preside.

ing committee and named chair
man of the Jackson county or
ganization, will participate in
the effort to secure the full co
operation of women's groups in
the door-to-door interviewing,
scheduled to begin February 16,
of all women above the high
school level. All women will be
registered, including those of
other nationalities.
In general, women will not be
called until all available Oregon
manpower has been utilized to
its fullest extent.
Naturally women listed In em
ployment offices are now seek
ing work and women displaced
by priorities unemployed will be
among the first called. Experi
ence, skill, domestic status, per
sonal responsibilities and many
other factors will be considered
when calling women Into active
duty.
Distinction is drawn between
the mobilization of women pro
gram and the variety of civilian
defense organizations. The reg
istry of women's skill will be
placed at the disposal of the
employment service, and if wom
en are called for emergency
work they will be fully paid ac-
. cording to union standards. Vol
unteer civilian defense workers
serve without pay.

lization program may be secured
from Lewis Ulnch, office man
ager of the employment service.

Corvallis, Jan. 17. (P) War
has replaced defense in the
name of what is now the USDA
war boards, organized last sum
mer in every state and county,
and composed of representatives
of the U. S. department of agri
cultural agencies.
Robert Taylor, Adams, chair
man of the Oregon board, has
been notified to use the new
name and to take the lead in
forwarding the wartime food
production program. The state
and county boards are also con
cerned with shortages of farm
materials, machinery and labor.

Seattle. Jan. 17. (.-Pi Mrs.
Kajper Peter Mellang, 28, died
early today without knowing
that she had given birth to a
son a few hours after her hus
band had carried her from their
blazing home in White Center,
a south side suburb. She was
not told that Mellang and their
2 '4-year-old son. James Henry,
perished in the flames.
