Two Books
Reviewed at
Study Club
Mrs. W. F. Campbell and Mrs.
Eldon Drysdale reviewed two
books at the Thursday Morning
Study club meeting at the
Girls Community clubhouse last
week.
"I'd Live It Over" by Flora
Cloman was the book selected
by Mrs. Campbell. The book
concerned the life of a woman
born near the cupper mines of
Montana. Educated by her Eng
lish father, her life was domi
nated by a beautiful optimism.
A teacher in her early life she
married a mining engineer and
resided later in Africa where
they became wealthy. She was
presented to the court of St.
James and after her husband's
death she lost her wealth and
now lives in a small apartment
within sight of her former man
sion. No misfortune seemd great
enough to diminish her viva
cious and friendly outlook ac
cording to the author. She com
pletely expressed herself when
she said "rich or poor, she felt
no different." She liked the
same things and the same peo
ple, regardless of her position
in life.
Allis McKay's story, "They
Came To A River" describes
the life of a woman born near
Wenatchee, Wash., wher. men
were just beginning to visualize
the possibility of irrigating the
arid Washington land.
Mrs. Drysdale reviewed the
planting of the apple orchards.
showed how the character was
reared near the Columbia river
and gained a broad and p'.acid
philosophy that all things take
care of themselves. The au
thor's ability to create the feel
ings of her character's first
dance, first phonograph record
and other experiences relived
for the reader the change from
early pioneer life to the present
day.
