FOR AMERICANS
Gearing Down of Transpor
. tation Speed Seen Dic
tated By Tire, Car Bans.
By Jack Stinnett
Washington The "horse and
buggy days" are coming back.
For the first time since the
second World war began, Mr.
Average American is going to
get a jolt where it hurts in the
neck that bends over the steer
ing wheel.
If "the duration" lasts as long
as some experts predict, motor
traffic will dwindle to a trickle.
In High Gear
There is an average of one
automobile to every family in
the United States. According to
the American Automobile asso
ciation, three-fourths of all the
driving done in these 30-odd
million vehicles is necessary to
maintenance of the home, office
or factory. If driving is drasti
cally curtailed and it's going
to be unless present orders are
rescinded that means that the
United States is in for one of the
greatest domestic upheavals it
has known.
Modern living is geared to the
rapid transportation of the auto
mobile and delivery truck.
Suburbanites, farmers, factory
workers who live miles from
their places of business, and
scores of other groups will have
to rearrange their lives com
pletely if they are to meet the
emergency that will be caused
by a vast lack in private trans
port. The first blow to be felt and
pretty quickly will be the result
of the ban on tire sales and sub
sequently the rationing on such
a restricted basis that only cars,
trucks and buses deemed vitally
necessary to the health and safe
ty of the nation will be able to
get rubber on which to roll.
Tire Pinch First
". The second curtailment will
not be felt until later but if this
war does drag out for a couple
of years or more, it will put the
kiss of death on motor transpor
tation as we think of it today.
That is the slash and complete
black-out of new car production.
The number of cars coming off
the assembly lines has been de
clining steadily since August.
However, because of the re
serve of used cars and because
many a family bus could be
nursed along for almost any
conceivable "duration," the car
production ban is not considered
as serious as the strict rationing
order on tires.
Tire stocks consist of between
seven and eight million new
tires. On a basis of annual pro
duction of 48,000,000 in this
country, that's about two
months' supply. The stock of
retreads and rebuilt tires is an
unknown quantity, but govern
ment guessers think it can't
possibly be greater than the new
tire stock pile. It is thought cer
tain here that when rationing

Philippine Islands. Three of the
men "played dead" for 28 hours.
gets under way, the retreads
and the use of rubber for re
treading also will come under
government bans.
This doesn't mean that under
rationine. anyone can eet tires
hn the next few months. This
possible four months' supply
may have to do for a year or
more. John Q. Public may learn
what it means to do without his
full quota of transportation even
before he feels the pinch of that
staggering new income tax. And
that is hardly more than weeks
away.

waters above Bonneville dam.
may become a huge "caviar
bowl" in the judgment of vet
eran fishermen.
White sturgeon, the source of
domestic caviar, were facing ex
Unction in the Columbia river,
as a result of unrestricted fish
ing, but now they have been dis
covered in large numbers in
Lake Bonneville. With proper
sanctuary there is no apparent
reason why they should not
thrive again here.
Before the beginning of the
20th century white Sturgeon
were virtually destroyed in the
Columbia by intensive fishing
that produced a catch of 5,000,
000 pounds yearly.
The killing off of thousands of
undersized sturgeon caught in
gill nets, seines, traps and wheels
by commercial fishermen, de
spite the fact that the taking of
small sturgeon has been prohib
ited for several years, has dimin
ished the 1941 catch to less than
40,000 pounds.
