If you are on of the 28,000,
000 persons In the United States
who own passenger automobiles,
you would do well to treat your
car with consideration because
you are going to have difficulty
replacing 1L
You may not need that re
placement for another year or
for 10 years, depending on the
general condition of the car you
now own. It has been estimated
authoritatively that the "aver
age life of the average car," Is
about eight years, during which
period the vehicle goes through
several ownerships and varying
degrees of Judicious us.
Long Lit Possible
But every ear built In the last
decade can be kept In satisfac
tory operation for at least 10
years If It owner so willed and
wa Inclined to devote Just a lit
tle personal attention to it each
day.
This writer recently drove a
car that for test purpose had
been In dally operation for near
ly a year and had piled up
83.000 mile. It had been given
only the normal, prescribed
maintenance, plu four change
of spark plujs, three fan belts,
on valve reconditioning, one
replacement ot battery and Igni
tion cable, two brak adjust
ment, one carburetor overhaul
and on change of tire.
This may sound Ilk a lot ot
service work on the car, but it
is worth noting that tha total
mileage represented approxi
mately nine year of average
driving and the car in appear
ance and handling actually wa
"a good a new."
The normal, prescribed main
tenance, Included regular chas
sis and body lubrication, tir in
flation, battery care, periodic
replacement of the carburetor
air intake cleaner acreen, regu
lar oil change, minor tune-ups,
change of transmission and dif
ferential lubricants and general
body care.
No Mew Tire
You will not ba able to re
pute the tires on your car with
new one and you may nave
difficulty obtaining some ot the
other replacement part under
the Impact of the war emergen
cy. You will be able to get most
of the service operation out
lined, however, because many ot
the dealers who heretofore have
relied on new and used car sale
for income are emphasizing
their readiness to repair and
service any vehicle.
Moreover, there are going to

shop, operated by competent
