"Oh, 1 don't know about that!'
aid Pete. "I saw a worn n walk

cas. "Ay way, I'm glad you got
here in runt lor me weaaing.
You U come, won t you?
"I certainly willP Miss Dorcas
aid eagerly. There's nothing I'd
like better than watching a couple
of fine young people like you and
oe getting married.
"Swell!" said Pete.
"What's more." said Miss Dor
eaa, "I'll give you a wedding sup
per or luncheon." She turned to
Lavinia. "You can invite a young
man, my dear and we u nave a
partyi "
"But, Aunt Dorcas," (aid La
vinia. "I"
"You can ask Freddy ," said Zoe.
swell fellow. Lots of people ac
cuse him of being a chaser, but'
"What's a chaser?" Miss Dorcas
wanted to know.
"A man," said Lavinia, "who's
trying to get a girl to take his
wife's nlace."
"That's not fair, Lavinia," said
Pete. "Freddv was only married
a little while, and I happen to
know that he goes around with a
lot of girls because be wants to
forget having lost his wife."
"that seems a funny way to
forget, said Lavinia.
"lie was quite cut up about
losing Kay," Pete went on. "He
doesn't mean any harm running
around with other girls. Anyway,
Lavinia, he's sincere in bis ad
miration for you."
"Aa well as for all the other
girls at Armworth's." said La
vinia.
Her aunt looked at her. Her
brow was sgain lifted in that
quizzical fashion Lavinia remem
bered so well.
"Is there some other man you'd
rather have? she askea.
"No." said Lavinia, feeling com
pletely helpless. "Freddy will do
as well as anyone.
Aunt Dorcas then went on
planning the party. But Lavinia
paid little attention. The sense of
contusion was worse man ever.
Aunt Dorcas, eager to attend a
wedding. Aunt Dorcas, planning
a wedding supper ... of all
things.
Then she heard Pete saying:
"Did you really shoot that bear
there? He pointed at the rug.
"I did," said Miss Dorcas. ''But
Td like to forget about it, if you
don't mind."
"But why. Aunt Dorcas?" La
vinia askea, staring. "I've always
looked forward to hearing you
tell about it"
"Very well," said Miss Dorcas,
"I'll tell you about it and then
we'll forget the matter from now
on.
She lit another cigarette. "I
saw the bear coming at me
looking, I thought, like a Rocky
Mountain with four legs. I
started to run, but realized the
bear could also run. I changed my
tnind, lifed my gun, shut my eyes
ana "
"Both eyes?" said Pete.
"Yea, both eyes," said Aunt
Dorcas, "I shut both eyes and
flred."
"And you hit him?" said Zoe.
"I did."
"What happened then?" Lavinia
asked.
"I fainted," said Aunt Dorcu.
The Streamlined Spinster
DURING the days following
Miss Dorcas's return, La
vinia continued to have a dazed,
confused sort of feeling. And this
feeling increased as she watched
her aunt'a metamorphosis the
gradual transformation of a fe
male explorer into a modern,
streamlined spinster; a spinster
who didn't look in the least like
one. And yet. In a way, it was also
interesting, watching the disap
pearance of the sort of person she
had always thought her aunt to
be, and seeing the appearance of
this entirely new person.
"I've been a museum-piece quite
long enough," Misa Dorcas said
one evening as she and Lavinia
were dining together in a restau
rant not far from Misa Dorcas's
hotel. "And, frankly, I rather like
myself as the beauty parlor has
made me." She watched Lavinia,
end asked: "Do you like me, my
dear?"
"Of course I do," Lavinia re-
Slied. "Only I've got to have a lit
e time to get accustomed to you
as the beauty parlor has msde
you."
"You've nothing on me there!"
said Misa Dorcas. "I need time to
get accustomed to myself." She
fllsnced mto a nearby mirror. "I
et them have their way with my
hair, and lips, and skin but 1
drew the line on red finger nails.
I think painted rails are down
right savage; in fact they remind
me of bloody talons in a jungle.
I'm glad you didn't go in for
them."
"I loathe them," said Lavinia.
They ate in silence for a few
moments. Then Lavinia spoke
once more.
"About the party you're giving
for Zoe and Peter," she said. "I
wish you'd make it dinner and a
ahow. Instead of dancing."
"Why?" Misa Dorcas wanted to
kr.ow.
"Because I dance terribly." said
Lavinia. She remembered that un
happy experience with Freddy.
'Then you should take lessons.
HI be glsd to foot the bill."
"I haven't the time. Besides
with a business career before me,
I see no need of becoming an ex
pert dancer."
"No?" Miss Dorcas was thought
ful. "I was under the impression
thst business women as well as
men felt social accomplishments
were aids to them in their work.
You know, being able to go out
and dance, and be gay so's to
bring in orders, or something."
Lots of them do feel that way,"
said Lavinia. "But they're mostly
men and women who nave some
thing to sell and want to make
a good impression on customers.
I buy, you see. I don't sell."
"But don't the people who wanl
to sell you ask you out?"
"Occasionally."
"Don't they want to dance
visit night clubs see the sights
of Manhattan?"
"Of course. But I usually man
age to inveigle them into seeing
1 show instead. Then, 1 tell them I
must get home the hour being
late."
"I see," said Miss Dorcas. "How
ever, I still think you ought to
lesrn to dance well."
"Perhaps you're right. But I
haven't time to learn Before youi
party so I hope you'll do as I
suggested, and make it the thea
tre. oe loves a .good ahow and
most men do."
"Very well, my dear." Miss Dor
cas drained her coffee cup. "But
whether yqu take dancing lessons
or not. In going to. I want to
learn the rhumba."
"Good heavens, Aunt Dorcas!"
"I watched savages doing wild
dances in the Jungles and I've an
Idea I can give some startling new
twists to what civilization calls
'primitive' dancing."
No Dinosaurlal
I A VINIA said nothing at once.
- She was too busy remember
ing a woman who sometimes came
into Armworth'a a woman about
her aunt's age, one who was de
termined to stay young and kit
tenish if it killed her. And sud
denly she felt a sense of fear and
worry lest Aunt Dorcas go to
the extreme and turn out to be
auch a person. She couldn't beat
It she simply could n t!
"By the way. Aunt Dorcas." she
said, deciding now was the time
to get ner aunts thoughts on
rhumbas and onto something else.
"I want to take you up to the
Zoological Park one afternoon."
"What for? asked Aunt Dorcas
"To see the way they now have
the animals the lions and "
"My child. I ve seen enough ani
mals to last me seven life-times! '
"And, Lavinia went on. "there
are aome especially fine skeletons
of Dinosauria and Dinotherium
over in the Brooklyn Museum.
I'm lure you'll be interested In
seeing them."
"And i n Just as sure I wouldn I
be interested in seeing them, my
dear girl," said Aunt Dorcas.
Listen. Lavinia. please. If vou'd
decided on a vacation, would you
want to spend it looking at depart
ment stores;
"No. Aunt Dorcas. I suooose
not. but"
Well. Im on a vacation of
sorts, and I don't want to look at
the things I ve been digging up
for years, nor the things I've
been shooting."
"But I do keep myself In touch
with department store activities
when I'm vacationing," said La
vinia. "I mean, I take along a lot
of trade Journals I've not had time
to read while at work, and I study
them while I'm on vacation."
That." said Aunt Dorcas, "is
filain insanity." She looked at the
ime. "We should be getting on to
your apartment. I bought some
clothes today and had them sent
there instead of the hotel. 1
wanted the judgment of you and
Zoe."
Then let's go!" said Lavinia
Tm crazy to aee what you got
But I'm paying the dinner check."
She reached for her purse.
"I won t argue, said hoi aunt

luncheon checks ever since I ar

"I hear 'Flight to the West" la

entire action takes place In a clip

Then It's definitely out," Miss
Dorcas interrupted. "Don't for
get I've been living the life of a
refugee for sometime, and that 1
had a hectic time on a clipper my
self. Aren't there any good musi
cal shows in town?"
"Why, ye. There's "Panama
Hattle' and there's the ice ahow
at the Center Theatre."
"I'd really like to see some
thing sort of Frenchy like I used
to see in Paris. However, I'll set
tle for a gay musical play II
there are catchy songs, and good
dancing."
"Then I suppose Tanama Hat
tle' will have to do."
"Good! I'll see to seats right
away. We'll doll up ait down
front and forget the trouble this
old world has gotten itself into."
Miss Dorcas smiled in anticipa
tion. Lavinia fell Into step with her
aunt "Now, about your own
clothes. 1 think a dinner gown
with verv simple lines, and
touches of lace here and there,
would be nice for you. A soft
shade of lavender."
"Listen, Lavinia," Misa Dorr as
exploded, "if you think you're
going to dress me up in lavender
and old lare, you're mistaken:"

RICH HAUL
In August, 1915. the British government sent $53,000,000 In gold to the U.S. to pay for muni
tions purchased. The shipment waa consigned to a New York bank, and arrived at Halifax, Nova
Scotia, aboard a fast British cruiser. From this point it waa shipped via American Express com
pany facilities, packed in Ordinary wooden boxea. The ahipment carried no other insurance than
the firms's own responsibility, even though the express company was capitalised for only about
one-third of the value of the ahipment at that timel The special train that carried the gold was
accompanied by 50 armed guarda. No untoward incident took place.
