Ne Clerk Miss Maurine
Shearer today began work as
a clerk at Rogue River national
forest headquarters. Transferred
from the regional forester's of
fice in Portland, Miss Shearer
arrived here yesterday by train
from her home in Cottage
Grove. She replaces Miss Mary
Wells who recently resigned to
get married. Miss Shearer has
taken up residence at 108 South
Orange street.

To Reside Here L. L. Simp
son, formerly construction fore
man on the Rogue River na
tional forest, said today he will
take up residence here again.
He arrived here Tuesday with
Mrs. Simpson and their young
son Ferris, whom he joined in
Okanogan, Wash., after . his re
cent return from Kodiak, Alas
ka, where he had worked for
five months as an engineer on
a defense project. Mr. Simpson
left Kodiak on the last steamer
to sail before Japan attacked
Hawaii. War broke out when
the ship was between Kodiak
and Seward and the passengers
were not told of hostilities until
the vessel reached Seward late
December 7, the day Japan
made its sudden attack, Mr.
Simpson said. The steamer re
mained In Seward for six days,
the trip from Kodiak to Seattle
taking 13 days, he related.

who has been employed on Mid
way island. Informed his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Peters
of Route 4, by cablegram today
that he had been evacuated to
Honolulu and was safe. He Is
the brother of Mrs. Dale Flow

left Medford in September for
Midway island.

Sentenced Homer Beauche-
mln, 47, who gave his address
as Medford, was sentenced by
Federal Judge James Alger Fee
in Portland to year in prison
for selling liquor to an Indian.
Beauchemin, described by po
lice as an itinerant cook who
was attracted to Medford by the
prospect of getting job be
cause of the proposed army
cantonment, was arrested for
selling liquor to an Indian while
U. S. district court was in ses
sion here last fall. The case
was continued by Judge Fee at
that time pending the filing of
pre-sentence report by the
probation officer.

were involved in a minor acci
dent on a street running through
Lithia park in Ashland yester
day afternoon, a report on file

mishap on the Oregon Switzer
land road five miles from Med
ford yesterday morning, accord

Skiing Good Conditions for
skiing were favorable today in
the Union Creek recreational
area of the Rogue River national
forest, headquarters reported.
The snow was 23 inches deep
with a surface of three inches of
powder snow. Crater Lake High
way to Union Creek was clear
and tire chains were not needed,
headquarters stated. Tempera
ture at 7 o'clock this morning
was 14 degrees, compared with
7 degrees at the same time yes
terday. Maximum yesterday was
29.

To School Robert Hani in, 18-year-old
son of U. S. Deputy
Marshal Paul Hanlln and Mrs.
Hanlin of 1018 East Jackson
boulevard, was one of seven
chosen from 136 navy recruits
to attend a yeoman s school
after they had passed their final
medical examinations at Port
land, according to word re
ceived here today. After enlist
ing here, Hanlin went to Port
land last Saturday. He was
believed still to be in Portland
today awaiting transfer to the
school to be designated. He was
manager of the grocery depart
ment of the Peerless Market
when he enlisted.

In Singapore, Gen. Sir Henry
R. Pownall, new commander-in-
chief of British Far East forces,
reported that "considerable help
is on the way to Malaya, even
as Japanese Invasion hordes
struck closer to Singapore in
fresh landings on the West Ma
laya coast.
Japanese vanguards were re
ported hurling themselves
against British defense lines only
190 miles north of Singapore on
the eastern Malaya coast, in the
Kuantan region, and 275 miles
north on the west coast In lower
Perak province.

cently arrived evacuees from
Honolulu to other parts of the
United States was speeded today
by cold wave which redoubled
the work of the Red Cross In
caring for temporarily Impover
ished war victims.
Most evacuees arrived with
only scant luggage. Many wore
tropical clothing, had no warm
er garments with them, and no
j money to replenish their chilly
wardrobe.

Twenty-six nations of the new
and old worlds have formally
pledged themselves, the White
House announced today, to em
ploy full resources against the
axis powers, and to enter Into
no separate armistice or peace.
The announcement of the pact
was made simultaneously here
and in the capitals' of the other
countries concerned.
The others are:
The United Kingdom of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland,
Russia, China, Australia, Bel
gium, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba,
Czechoslokakia, the Dominican
Republic, 1 Salvador. Greece,
Guatemala. Haiti, Honduras. In
dia, Luxembourg, The Nether
lands, New Zealand, Nicaragua,
Norway, Panama, Poland, South
Africa and Yugoslavia.
President Roosevelt signed for
the United States and Prime
Minister Winston Churchill for
Great Britain.
The countries formally de
clared:
"(1) Each government pledges
itself to employ its full resources.

those members of the tripartite
pact and its adherents with
which such government is at
war.
"(2) Each government pledges
itself to cooperate with the gov
ernments signatory hereto and
not to make a separate armistice
or peace with the enemies.
The brief statement of interna
tional unity of purpose said also
that other nations may adhere to

ing or may render material as
sistance "in the struggle for vic
tory over Hitlerism."
Jaen Guardia, the Panamanian
minister, had told of the pact
earlier in the day.

DEFENSE EFFORT
San Francisco, Jan. 2,
Twenty-five thousand boys of
the Civilian. Conservation corps
along the Pacific coast have been
recruited for urgent military and
strategic construction, it was an
nounced today by the headquart
ers of the western defense com
mand and fourth army.
Acting upon a request by Sec
retary of War Stimson, CCC Di
rector James J. McEntee has ap
proved the use of all CCC en-1
rollees for national defense duty.
All of the 236 CCC companies
in the ninth corps area have
been made available for this
work but each project and as
signment must be approved by
McEntee except In emergency
cases. In such cases, the corps
area commander may all upon
the necessary companies. -
Supervision of the work by
CCC enrollees will be carried
out by the chief of engineers and
the division or district engineers
under him.
