The Bright Star
On high the bright star scintil
lates.
Excelling in Us might.
But peace on earth has turned
to hates,
Treachery supplants right.
Far from the glories of its path
Where truth and love prevail,
The war-lords wildly strike in
wrath;
Yet the star does not fail.
Tonight the earth trembles in
space.
And hearts are torn with pain;
The sheep have wandered from
their place,
His teachings seem in vain.
But with our eyes upon the star
We make a solemn vow;
To let no troubled visions mar,
It will not fail us now.
-Jane Garrett,

Carroll Barnes of Three Rivers
has cut a 22-ton "morsel" from
a Sequoia log which he plans
to convert into the largest exist

the world. It will be a statue

erected on a grassy, oak-studded
knoll along the Generals'

Helps In Many Ways.
Los Angeles. U.R) True
stories, stranger than the font iest
tiction, are unfolding daily in
offices of the works prjjecta ad
ministration where hundred, of
eager workers seek help In ploy
ing thev are Americans.
From yellowed newspnper
clippings, frayed baptismal certi
ficates and other long-negle.-ted
records, parents are finding long
lost children, brothers are learn
ing of sisters they never knew
existed and others are discover
ing dramatic events in their lives
for the first time.
H. Russell Amory, southern
California administrator for the
WPA, explained that proving
citizenship is on important tarl
of the agency's program in get
ting workers back to private em
ployment. Must Have Certificates
It Is essential to have proper
certificates of birth before ob
taining Jobs In defense indus
tries to which most of the re
habilitated WPA workers are go
ing, Amorv said. In searcl.ing
for these certificates clerks
have uncovered hundreds of
Comic, tragic and dramatic facts,
he added.
From a certified copy of an old
newspaper, which one v A
lerk found, a man read for the
first time about the muraii of
his father 35 years ago. The
story clso mentioned surviving
children and dates of their birth
. . . aiding the man in procuiing
hi birth certificate.
Another man. learning he was
an Illegitimate child, found his
mother liv'ng, happily married
i and with four other children.
The WPA worker didn't identify
himself.

Brother, Sister United
A brother and sister, adopted
oy different foster parents, were
tnited when a southern Ca'lfor
nia WPA worker unearthed their
relationship.
In another case a man discov
ered he was two yenrs youi.ger
than his parents had told riim.
This Improved his chances ot a
job.
Amory snld that many peiple
never knew, until proof of their
birth was required, that tney
were born abroad. On two
cases, he said, children born
abroad were brought to the
United States by foster parents.
They had to become naturalized
since the law prohibits claiming
citizenship through foster par

AIR RAID SIREN
HEARD BY DOGS
BUT NOBODY ELSE
Tacoma, Wash., Dec. 27. (fP)
This city of 110,000 had a five
minute air raid warning test
tonight and newspaper and
police telephone switchboards
were flooded with calls but
only by persons who aked why
they couldn't hear the warning
siren.
. Police soon learned however
that the siren was heard by
practically every dog In the
city. The canine populace in
all parts of the city started a
forlorn howl soon after the first
low rumblings of the warning
whistle was heard by numans.
An apparent explanation was
that certain high pitch notes
too high for the human ear but
sensitive to a dog was also
broadcast by the siren.
Tillamook, Dec. 27. (JP) A
dozen families on Bewley creek
near here heard a whistle last
night and engaged in their own
private blackout.
They learned today that the
supposed air raid warning came
from a whistle that became
stuck on a logging camp donkey
engine.
