Talent Grange met Dec. 18
at which time Frances Shumate
was added as a new member.
Discussion in regard to the de
fense program brought out what
was expected of the Grangers
and the problems they would
have to face in the way ot a
shortage in farm machinery and
other things.
Earl Yaryan, master-elect, re
signed as he has enlisted in the
army. This necessitated an elec
tion to flu the vacancy and
Master Geo. Hartley was re
elected. Roy Roberson, another
member of the Grange, has also
Joined the army.
Those having perfect Grange
attendance records for the past
year were Mrs. Nora Wolters.
James Wolters and Elton Petri.
Program for the evening was
in keeping with the Christmas
theme and the singing of Christ
mas carols and distributing of
gifts and candy completed the
evening. Next regular meeting
will fall on New Year's Day and
it was decided to have covered
dish dinner to begin promptly
at 7 o'clock.
Eagle Point Grange
Jupiter Pluvlus pulled an
other brltzkrleg on our lodge
night, but we were there and
ready for supper at 7:80 with
business meeting following.
Ways in which we could best
help In the national defense
program were discussed. One
new name was added to our
membership list.
Literary program was In keep
ing with the Christmas season.
We Initiated our new piano.
Minnie Putman White gave an
interesting talk on Alaska,
where she has been living for
the past several months. Ross
Kline told of their trip to Ohio
and home by the southern route.
H. E. C. will hold Its next
meeting at the home of Ethel
Coy, at which time we will have
a gift exchange.
Since Dinty Moore Is tome-
wnere on the Pacific ocean,

charge of the corn beef and
cabbage supper served at the
Grange hall New Year's eve,
He will be ably assisted by the
other men In the grange who
win prepare, cook and serve
this delightful dish. Supper will
be served from 6:30 until 8
o'clock, followed by an evening
of cards and who knows, maybe
a square dance or two.
A nominal charge will be
made for this evening of fun
and the public is cordially In

December 28 at 1:30 p. m.

The New Year
To the editor:
Happy New Yearl The house-
cleaning time of the soul. The
time when shabby habits of
thought and the little mean
nesses of conduct are cast out
and replaced with visions of
good deeds to be done, high
purposes to be accomplished
and lofty ideals to be realized i
in order to develop the best of j
which we are capable. I
We each need desperately a
guiding star, a fair vision of
future Joys to strive for, some
thing beyond reach which the
soul yearns to possess. It is in
striving that happiness lies, not
in attaining. When we have
reached the goal of our striving
we must have another Just be
yond for which to endeavor, to
honestly work for, something
greater and better than we
already have. Persons who have
mastered these rules for happi
ness know not disappointment
and discouragement, and never
despair.
Happihess Is a state of mind,
neither a condition nor a cir
cumstance of life. It comes from
within and may be ours for the
asking. It Is, however, not our;
to command. To command it Is
to destroy It. As we give to
others unselfishly, without hope
of reward, so happiness Is born
and lives.
Happiness comes not by quar
reling, envy or malice, not by
cheating or greed, but by love,
which asks no return. Charity
gives understanding by unself
ishness and seeks no praise. We
are true philosophers when we
cieariy realize that what we
keep we lose, what we give we
maintain.
In the New Year we will sort
out the good things In our lives
that came to us in the old, for
they are our source of strength
in the future.

Not Hate But Firm Resolve
To the Editor:
We, as Americans neither
hate nor fear the Japanese. We
have always rather admired the
little brown men" for their
beautiful art works: their ambi
tion to study and progress; and
the ones who have come to the
United States and succeeded as
gardeners and business men are
much to be admired for their
thriftiness. They are good stu
dents where we have permitted
them In our schools, they have
been friendly and pleasant and
we cannot help but feel that
the American-born Japanese are
loyal to the United States and
all It stands for; and we also
believe many, perhaps the ma
jority of their Japanese-born
parents are Just as loyal. It Is
their misfortune, not their fault
that they have been dominated
by their native land and forced
to pay allegiance to Japan.
We have not been a warlike
nation, we have fought against
floods, earthquakes, insect pesta
and the like, reclaimed desert
lands that we might raise more
crops, but we have tried to be
peaceful toward all men. But
now that Japan has attacked us,
we will defend our country to
the limit. Some of those who
have' come to our country will
prove traitors, but I earnestly
believe there are enough of the
others, with we who were born
here, to defend our country to
the last man. If the natives of
the United States feel as strong
ly the steel ot courageous red
pioneer blood as I do, and
sincerely believe they do, there
Is no sacrifice we will not make
to keep our own, our native
land, the United States of Amer
ica, "The land of the free and
the home of the brave."
But we MUST NOT relax our
vlgllence. Our country has been
attacked by an enemy and every
man. woman and child In our
country must be made to realize
the danger that threatens us,
and that before we are bombed
and made to suffer what Eng
land and other countries have
been made to suffer. There Is
no use to "lock the barn after
the horse has been stolen," to
let ut keep our defenses up
until this menace It removed
It toon gets monotonous petrol
ing, observing blackouts, etc.
when nothing happens. But un
til all danger is past, do let's
keep these defenses and safe
guards operating. Oh, let us
NOT be taken by surprise.

The days are warm but the

many kinds of recreation avail
able, the article said. Softball,
badminton, boxing, wrestling
and other athletic games were
available for those inclined to
ward sports. Hunting land and
cocoanut crabs after dark pro
vided tun lor many. A sheltered
lagoon was used for swimming.
At the commissary all needed
things could be purchased at
cost, clothing of all kinds, fish
ing equipment, magazines, cig
arettes, etc., the article said. A
