Grants Pass, Dec. 22. CP)
Mixed tidings came this Christ
mas week to Grants Pass resi
dents. The war's first word from
Palmyra, tiny naval pinpoint of
land 1,000 miles southwest of
Hawaii, arrived, and that word
was "okay". Letters written
Dec. 10, after the outbreak of
war, and passed by naval censor,
told families here of the safety
of southern Oregon men hired
to work on a naval base there.
The blacked-out lines did not
reveal whether or not there had
been an attack.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Lula J. Grif
fith received word today that
her son, Sgt. John A. Wright of
the marine corps, had been kill
ed in action. Mrs. Griffith did
not know whether he was called
into Atlantic or Pacific waters,
Albert Wall, ran of Mrs. A.
M. Wall of 628 MrAndrews road,
has been engaged on defense
projects on Paimyra island.
