CHOIR TO PRESENT
The choir of the First Christ
ian church assisted by Peter
Larsen, of Corvallis, will pre
sent the cantata "Night of Holy
Memories," by Ira B. Wilson,
Sunday at 7:30 p. m. This will
be one of the finest presenta
tions given by the Christian
church for several years. The
regular choir of 30 voices will
be assisted by a girls' chorus
and Robert Brewer will play
trombone solo.

Of All States Asked
Washington, Dec. 19. VP)
President Roosevelt said today
he had asked governors of the
states and territories to transfer
Immediately to the federal em
ployment service all separate
state and territorial employment
agencies.
Mr. Roosevelt added that the
governors were giving full co
operation to the war effort.
The requested, transfer, the
president told his press confer
ence, is designed to bring about
utilization to the fullest possible
extent of all man and woman
power to Increase the output of
war materials.

5000 Italians Lost
In Navy Engagement
Off Tunisian Coast
Tunis, French Tunisia, Dec.
15 (Delayed) (AP) Approxi
mately S.000 Italian seamen lost
their lives December 12 when
British naval units sank two
Italian cruisers, a destroyer and
three transports off the Tunis
ian town of Kellbla on Cape
Bon.
Some 1,000 Italians were res
cued and are being treat for
burns and other injuries in
cities along the Tunisian coast.
The Italian cruisers sunk were
the 5,000 ton Giussano and
Alberlco Da Barbiano which
normally carried complements
totalling 1,000 men.
The attack was said to have
occurred at midnight December
12.
(The British admiralty an
nounced last Saturday that
Japanese forces continued to menace British and U. S. positions In vital zones: (1) the
Island of P.nang off the coast of northwest M.l.yai (2) Borneo, where Japanese landings
were reported In Sarawak, in area of Mlri, where Dutch reported direct hit en Japanese
destroyer! (3) Vigan, In Philippines, where the U. S. army announced 28 Japanese planes
had been destroyed (4) Hongkong, where Japanese siege continued in increasing severity.
Meanwhile Tokyo announced 190 persons had been killed in an earthquake in southern
Formosa (5) with communications disrupted between Kagt and Tainan.

A heavy wind and snow storm
swept over the high hills of
Jackson county Tuesday and
Wednesday, leaving 18 inches of
snow at Fish lake, main source
of Irrigation water supply for
the Medford irrigation district,
and eight inches at Lake o'
Woods.
The Fish lake caretaker re
ported by phone late yesterday
that many trees had been blown
down, some across trails and
the phone line. The snowfall at
Fish lake, the most -substantial
of the winter, was followed by a
heavy rain that packed the
snow.
Crews are now out repairing
the telephone line from Klam
ath county, and from Butte
Falls to Fish lake.
About a foot of snow fell in
the Prospect and Butte Falls
districts. There was also a con
siderable fall on the high ridges
of the Applegate and the Siskl-youa.

City schools closed this after
noon for the Christmas recess.
Classes will be resumed Janu
ary 5.
Final Christmas programs
were held in the schools today.
Some classes had already held
theirs.
State Workers Given
Warning On Auto Use
Salem, Dec. 19. VP) All
state employes were warned by
Budget Director David Eccles
today that they are subject to
fines of $25 to $100 if they used
state-owned automobiles for pri
vate purposes.
The warning was contained
In a six-page circular outlining
regulations governing expense
accounts.
Maximum allowances for ho
tel accommodations is $2.50 a
day, and for meals $2 a day.
Maximum allowances for out-
of-state travel are $7 a day.

and Mrs. L. M. Wlthee of 713
West 11th street had provided
a home for the female Irish set
ter that, apparently lost, hung
around the Mail Tribune alley
for three days early this week.
Meantime Mr. Wlthee Is still
trying to find his male Irish
setter. Red, who joined another
dog and departed on hunting
expedition of his own. Red has
been reported in various parts
of the county but Mr. Withee
has not received the reports
soon enough to catch up with
him. His latest whereabouts
were reported in the Ross Lane
district. Mr. Withee would like
to have anyone seeing the dog
call him by name and try to
keep him until the owner can
call for him. A reward has been
advertised for Red.

we Americans are ready to get
up and fight for our rights, and
I also hope this letter will prove
that we are ready to apoligize
when In the wrong.
I'm sorry but I didn't get to
listen to the radio Friday eve
ning and went to all the trouble
to blackout when there was no
blackout and didn't know the
difference till Saturday night
when they came to get my hus
band to help guard the reser
voir. I was in the wrong and I am
sorry and hope my apology is
accepted. If it Isn't I guess I did
all I can to make it right.
