DR. POSTON TELLS
ROTARY CLUB OF
LIFE IN ECUADOR
An Intimate gUmpsa into life
in Ecuador and the itrategic
military Importance of that
South American country was
given members of Medford Rot
ary club Tuesday by Dr. R. E.
Poston, cf Ashland, at the reg
ular luncheon-meeting at Hotel
Medford.
"In Ecuador, as In other South
American counties, the 'good
neighbor policy has had Its ef
fect and this little nation has
become one of America's war
allies. This Is highly important
because of the strategic location
of Ecuador In relation to the
Panama Canal, the fact that this
country owns the off-shore Gal
apagos islands and due to the
sizeable German population.
There are no Japanese In this
country," Dr. Poston told Ro-
tarians.
Ecuador has a population of
nearly three million people,
mostly primitive Indians. The
country has a widely varied cli
mate and is economically self-
contained as far as food stuff
is concerned. Petroleum, fruit
and gold are the principal re
sources, according to Dr. Pos
ton.
In an introductory discussion
on the current Japanese sltun
tion, Frank J. Newman told
members of the Medford Rotary
club that there are now approx
imately 190,000 Japs in the
United States, 100,000 of whom
are citizens. More than 70,000
of these Japanese reside In Cal
ifornia and account for 75 per
cent of the state's produce
crops. Relative naval strengths
of this nation and Japan was
also outlined by Mr. Newman.
