Hitler Hopes Declarations
Against United States Will
Help His Cause -MacKenzie

The declaration of war against the United States by Germany
and Italy, in alliance with Japan, was fully expected and doesn't
Iter the position materially,
Herr Hitler, as overlord oft
the Axis, undoubtedly hopes
that the moral effect of this
declaration, delivered at a mo
ment of great triumph because
of Japanese successes, will bene
fit his cause. However, it is
likely that the effect has been
largely discounted in advance.
True, this may presage more
direct action against the United
States. Indeed one would expect
this to be so. But that action
would have come in any event,
for the normal Axis strategy is
to strike without warning. It
happens to suit Hitler's purpose
now to make a show of the for
mality. As for the Japanese end of
our now all-inclusive war, the
long lane Is showing some slight
curves even though no turning
has developed.
News Not All
Bad Now
We have some good news to
go with the bad. Foremost Is the
announcement by an American
army spokesman in Manila that
"the situation is completely in
hand" In connection with the
Japanese landings on the island
of Luzon, of which Manila is the
capital. With this is recorded
the fine success of our bombers
in making three direct hits on
a Jap battleship off Luzon and
leaving It a blazing mass.
This is encouraging In view
of the ital Importance of our
defense of the Philippines. The
battle fit the Pacific at this mo
ment pivots on the Japanese as
saults against the two great
allied basesour own Philip
pines and Britain's Singapore.
Possession of these two pow
erful bases is essential to con
trol of the Pacific. That is to
say, It Is essential to successful
prosecution of the war In the
far east.
While the word from Manila
la cheering, we shouldn't Jump
to conclusions. The Japanese at
tack is continuing, with fighting
forces ashore at various points,
and a further landing of para
chute troops at an airport near
IUanga was reported this morn
ing. We have to sail through a
lot of dirty weather yet.
Russians Add
To Nasi Losses
The sensational success of the
Japanese in the first round of
this fresh conflict very naturally
hat distracted attention from
the European war. Had the
world taken trouble to glance at
this theatre it would have learn
ed that the Russians have had
further successes, both in the
Leningrad and the Moscow sec
tori, and report inflicting bloody
losses on the Germans.
Simultaneously the Nazis an
nounce with apparent compla
cence that their advance forces
have withdrawn to winter lines
along the Russian front. The
military spokesman In Berlin
said the German push eastward
was finished until spring. That
Is cheerful news for the allies,
for It will give the Bolshevists
a chance to recuperate from the
effects of their fierce struggle
thus far.
A greater-than-usual seasonal
decline In residential building
has set In since September 1,
according to the department of
commerce.

ner of the Craterlan theatre's
unique "Movie Memory" con
test, according to an announce
ment today by officials of the
theatre. More than 250 entries
were examined by three local
judges this morning and . the
eight prize winners- selected
were as follows:
First prize of $8 to Jerry
Mansfield; second prize of $3
to Eileen Young, 10 Portland
avenue, Medford; third prize of
$2 to Bernice Stearns, 322 West
Fourth street, Medford; and five
prizes of double passes to see
Clark Gable In "Honky Tonk,"
which Is playing at the Crater
lan theatre through Saturday,
were awarded to Verna Burn
ette of 204 South Grape, Mrs.
Charles H. Ward of Everette
Court, West Eleventh street;
Mary Ellen Loeffler of 400
North Ivy street; Roger Wolf
of 718 West Fourth street, all
of Medford, and to Nelda Wil
liams, route 2, box 74, Ash
land, Ore.
Special mention was given to
Shirley Panky, Virginia Allen,
Marjorle Henry, Margaret Kai
ser, Myrtle McLaren, Mary
Bllderback, Annls Scrlpter, Bev
erly Wright, Mrs. Ivan Herring-

Checks will be mailed today
to the three cash winners and
the remaining five may call for

BIG SNOW OF 19
IS
Long time residents of the
city and valley recalled today
was the 22nd anniversary of the
big snow, on December 11,
1919.
William Bates remembered It
was just such a day as this,
and snow started about 4 In the
afternoon. The next morning he
measured II Inches of snow In
front of his barbershop. The
snow was followed the follow
ing night by a freeze, and dozens
of water pipes froze up, and
plumbers were busy. Electric
power was disrupted, and a
show at the old Tage theater
was presented by lantern-light.
A few days later a Chinook
wind came, and the snow vanished.
