SPORTSMEN TOLD
.ROGUE FISHING
Rogue River has been affect
ed by civilization more than any
other stream in the state, and
from one of the finest fishing
streams in Oregon it has grad
ually gone "down, down, down,"
Frank Wir, state game com
mission supervisor, told some
50 persons attending the an
nual banquet sponsored by the
Rogue River Sportsmen's club
and the Central Point Sports
men's club in Hotel Medford
Friday night.
The construction of dams and
Irrigation ditches, and mining
activities, has caused serious de
pletion of fish in the river. Wire
said, and added that he was
"scared of what the army can
- tonment, If and when it is built,
0 will further do to the river."
The strain on the river is
heavy enough now, Wire stated.
"If the cantonment Is built," he
said, "the river is certain to be
forced to bear a much heavier
burden."
Switching to a discussion of
the big game situation in Ore
gon, Wire said the state was
third in the nation in elk pop
ulation, third in antelope pop
ulation, fourth in mule deer
population and second in black
tail population. He said that
more big game was killed this
year than ever before.
Wire pleaded with all sports
men to cooperate with the game
commission and with law en
forcement officers, and said
that 95 percent of the hunters
and fishermen were honest and!
didn't need officers to enforce
uie laws.
E. E. Wilson, chairman of th
state game commission, predict
ed that fishing seasons would be
shortened and bag limits de
creased In Oregon in the future,
and expressed .the belief that
sportsmen would accept the re
ductions gracefully. j
Wilson stated th
hatchery near Butte Falls would
be turned over to the game
commission, probably by the
first of the year. Plans are be
ins made tlV th Mmmlclnn
make improvements at the
naxcnery, such as building race
ways to raise better cutthroat
trout, he said.
It was emnhanlTMl hv Wll
that hatcheries were not the
main solution for
of fish stock in streams and
lanes, that natural propagation
was much more important.
Charles Lockwood, assistant
supervisor of the came mmmlt
sion, gave a review of the scien
tific survey being made by the
commission in Rogue river, and
its tributaries, as well as in
other parts of the state, explain
ing that much data was being
gathered concerning the food
ana naoits of the fish.
Lockwood said that ae a rm.
suit of this survey, the com
mission leu it had enough evi
dence to win any future court
cases similar to the Kubli liti
gation, which the commission
lot.
The planting of fish was be
ing done according to findings
of the surveys, Lockwood ex
plained. He said that trout were
not beinff Dlantpd until thpv h-
came from six to eight inches
long, thus insuring a 90 per
cent survival instead of about
10 percent for trout two inches
long.

the banquet, declared the val

fag: namely, the cantonment, if

proposed government dam at
Debenger's Gap. The dam, he
stated, will be a threat to mi

his organization, along with the
Oregon Wildlife Federation, was
opposed to its construction.
Workins in close cooperation
with the commission, the Rogue

this screening program, he said
there was a continuous loss of

Denman said Copco had
