Mickey Rooney went to the
president' birthday ball In
Washington. As a result, Red
Skelton is knocking them dead
in Hollywood, making his latest
appearance in "Lady Be Good,"
In company with such stars as
Eleanor Powell, Ann Sothern
and Robert Young. The picture
opens today at the Craterian
theatre.
As a guest performer at the
birthday ball, Rooney was intro
duced to Master of Ceremonies
, Skelton. Skelton had his audi
ences in a complete laugh panic.
Rooney was so Impressed that
when he landed in New York he
could talk of nothing else to
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer executive
J. Robert Rubin. As the result,
Skelton was given a screen test,
and is now hailed as that com
pany's greatest comic discovery,
Skelton plays a song plugger
in "Lady Be Good," which re
volves about a song-writing
couple who click on Tin Pan Al
ley. In addition to a top story
and top tunes, the film presents
unusual dance numbers with
Eleanor Powell introducing three
new routines.
Presenting Ann Sothern once
again as a song star, "Lady Be
Good" is but the forerunner of
pictures which will see Miss
Sothern utilizing her rich, lyric-
soprano voice.

tenced to 90 days in the Spo
kane county Jail and ordered
then turned over to Canadian
officials.

ALONG SEA LANES
London, Nov. 29. (Pi The
German air force is sowing "con
siderable" mines along the sea
lanes off the west coast of Eng
land through which some United
States ships coming directly to
Britain must sail, an authorita
tive source said tonight.
He said that this mining had
been a continuing process but
that the British had been "very
successful" in dealing with air
sown mines, although the "nui
sance value" to the Germans had
been enormous, considering how
many men were required to keep
the approaches swept clear.

to proceed there for immediate
'duty. Lt. Ford attended Oregon
State college.

The widely-heralded biogra
phical tribute to one of the
World war's greatest heroes has
been acclaimed from coast to
coast as the greatest picture of
the year. In addition to the ex
citing war sequences, including
York's famous capture of 132
Germans, the film play shows
the other side of Alvin York,
little known to most, as the Ten
nessee mountaineer, who "got
religion," became a conscientious
objector, yet emerged as one of
the greatest heroes of all time.
WITHHOLDING TAX
SEEN INEVITABLE

President Roosevelt will call
treasury experts and congres
sional leaders to a White House
conference, probably next week,
to seek an agreement on the
substance of proposed new tax
legislation.
Plans for the meeting were
disclosed today by Chainsan
George (D-Ga) ot the senate fi
nance committee, who told re
porters he expected any new
revenue program to provide for
a payroll withholding tax.
ACTOR'S FATHER DIES
Centralia, Wash., Nov. 29 (JP)
John F. Bickel, 82, father of
Frederic March, noted stage and
film star, died here early today
at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. George Ripley. A resident
of Racine. Wis., all his life,
Bickel came her 16 months
go.
