Recent Voluntary Allocation

nue to cities for the maintenance
and construction of streets.
This action came after a dis
cussion on the general subject
which was brought about by a
talk by Virgil Langtry of Port
land, field consultant of the
league who reviewed the recent
voluntary action of the state
highway commission In allocat
ing $250,000 on a proportionate
basis to cities for the repair and
maintenance of streets which
have been used more than usual
of late by the movement , of
heavy defense material, aucb as
logs, In trucks.

ity agency, described the work
of his division as it relates to
the national defense program
Craig Duer, city auditor of
Grants Pass, discussed the local
budget law and its requirements
concerning itemization. James
Q. Adams, city recorder of Ash
land, Frank P. Farrell, city at
torney of Medford, and A. E.
Powell, Jackson county commis
sioner, presented their views re-,
garding requirements for publi
cation of budgets. Delegates
from various cities described
their park administration and
systems of police and fire re
serves. , Other topics discussed were
pension systems for public em
ployes, reduction of fire Insur
ance rates on municipal proper
ty, practice of cities in providing
outside fire protection, and the
county road tax law,

The league session opened
with a luncheon in the Hotel
Medford over which Mayor H.
S. Deuel presided. After the
luncheon the meeting was turn
ed over to Mayor C. C. Chad
wick of Salem, vice president of
the league, and Mayor John
Houston of Klamath Falls, a
director of the league, who led
'discussions of the various muni
cipal subjects which city offi
cials and guests chose to pre
sent. City officials and depart- !
ment heads were present from 1
Medford, Ashland, Grants Pass, i
Central Point. Eagle Point and i
Phoenix. Members of the Jack- j
son county court also were pres
ent. Also attending was Orval
Etter of Eugene, legal consult
ant of the league. It was an
nounced that Mayor Earle Riley
of Portland, who was to be pres
ent, was unable to come to Med
ford because of the illness of ,
his wife and the death of Ma J.- !
