OF
PRACTICE STEPS
If Monday night's meeting of
the Jackson County Square
Dancing club is any indication,
the young and old will be
promenading all over the county
in a very short time. Dream
land hall was filled to capacity,
19 sets coming to receive fur
ther training in square danc
ing, according to Miss Marian
J. Farrell, home demonstration
agent.
To start the evening, Amos
Walker led a huge circle mixer.
Then sets and callers represent
ing the Bellview Orange, Na
tional Park Service, Phoenix
Grange and Eagles Lodge, dem
onstrated and led the different
square dances. Harry Weagant
and the group from Talent di
rected the schottish. polka and
rye waltz, and Mrs. Marjorie
Pena called the Virginia reel.
Miss Izola Jensen who origi
nally introduced square dancing
in Jackson county last month
as a part of the Oregon State
college extension service recrea
tion program, says the country
reeds Just such forms of enter
tainment now in order to build
sound healthy bodies and to
provide opportunities for all
people to forget the cares of the
world for a few hours of vig
orous recreation.
The Applegate and Medford
groups have already organized
Into clubs with meetings sched
uled twice a month. Other com
munities represented last night
were Gold Hill, Central Point,
Griffin Creek, Oak Grove, Phoe
nix, Bellview, Talent, and How
ard and are planning to organize
in the near future.
GREENER. LEANER
Pierre S. D. P) Tell a

country his pastures are the
greenest In many years and
things certainly do look nice
this fall. You get a sour smile.
Green grass produces soft fat
that shrinks off tm the trip to
market. South Dakota stockmen
much prefer ripe, brown buf
falo grass that cures early In
the summer, but liberal fall
rains have turned ranches green
again six months early.

ONE IN MIL
One man was In a local hos
pital today with four knife
wounds in the chest and another
was being held on an open
charge while city police further
investigated a stabbing affray
which occurred about S p. m.
yesterday in an alley at the
rear of Otto's club, 39 South
Front street.
Hospitalized with the knife
wounds, one of which pene
trated his left lung, was Alphues
William Finley, 53, of the Allen
hotel, a cook by trade. His at
tending physician reported the
man was in considerable pain
today, but that the wounds were
not expected to prove critical.
Held in city jail and accused
by Finley of stabbing him, was
Dennis D. Dulworth, 28, an
orchard worker who lives in a
shack Just north of McAndrews
road.
Police questioned Dulworth
this morning, obtaining his side
of the story, and planned to
interrogate Finley in the hos
pital this afternoon.
Dulworth was quoted by po
lice as saying that Finley in
sulted him while the pair were
in Otto's club and that he in
vited Finley outside to fisht.
When they reached the alley,
according to Dulworth's story
to police, Finley drew a pocket
knife and slashed Dulworth's
left wrist.
Dulworth told police he then
took the knife away from Fin
ley and "made several passes
at him" with the knife Later,
a friend took Dulworth to a lo
cal doctor where his cut wrist
was treated. Dulworth admitted
to police that he had been
drinking considerably, and did
not remember anything from
the time he was in the doctor's
office until he awakened in Jail
this morning. He was arrested
last night at his home.
The first police knew of the
stabbing affray was when Fin
ley walked into the police sta
tion at 5:30 and reported that
he had four knife wounds in
the chest. At that time he told
police he had been stabbed by
Dulworth.
