Two Reports

Study Club
A paper on the Caribbean and
a magazine article on the Virgin
Islands was the third of a series
of programs on countries adja
cent to and vitally important to
the defense of the United States
discussed at the Wednesday
Study club last week at the
Girls' Community clubhouse.
Mrs. M. M. Morris presided dur
ing the afternoon session.
Mrs. T. W. Miles discussed the
Caribbean, pointing out that al
though smaller than the Medi
terranean the sea is bordered by
eleven independent states, the
twelfth, Mexico, faces both the
. Caribbean and the Gulf of Mex
tea. The area Is rich in natural
resources and remarkably pro
ductive. She stated that stra
tegic metals are found In several
states, lumber Is plentiful and it
is one of the richest petroleum
areas in the world.
Most Important from the
standpoint of world politics, Is
Its location, Mrs. Miles said,
which lies across one of the
world's greatest trade routes.
Because of Its vital position In
U. S. defense the United States
Is spending (40,000,000 in de
fense preparation. Puerto Rico,
called the watchdog of the Car
ibbean, will be headquarters for
28,000 officers and men, 12.000
of whom are already on the
island. Mrs. Miles also told of
her trip through the Panama
Canal and many Interesting ob
servations on places and inhabi
tants she had seen.
Speaking of the Virgin Islands
Mrs. B. O. Harding explained
their history and that in 1917
that they had been purchased
by the United States from Den
mark at a cost of $23,000,000
The sale Included three main
Islands and about 80 plndot
islands. Besides controlling the
famous Anegada passage, they
form the country's eastern out
post for the U. S. navy. The
three Islands, St. Thomas, St.
John and St. Croix, are perhaps
the most beautiful Islands on
the globe, Mrs. Harding said.
The islands form a tropic
playground that Is attracting in
creasing numbers of visitors
each year. The U. S. government
ii bettering health conditions
and land-owners and workers
are busily trying to recover for
the Islands the trade power that
existed In the 1700's.
Charlotte Amalle, capital Is
one of the finest harbors In the
West Indies. The old Danish
fort, Krederlkstad, and the port
of Chrlstiansted, the terminal of
an insular steamship line, are a
few of the many places of Inter
est In the Islands the speaker
said.

policy department will meet at
the home of the chairman, Mrs.
Justin Smith, 21 Geneva street,
at 7:30 o'clock. Mrs. Smith will
give the opening paper of the
study series, speaking on the
historical background of the
present tension In the Pacific
area.

Plans Completed
