The usual holiday upswing In
(ales appeared in retail stores
this week, aided substantially
by preparations for Thanksgiv
ing, fall clearances and early
Christmas shopping. Dun
Bradstreet reported today.
"Shoppers' greater emphasis
on wearing apparel and other
soft goods," the agency review
said, "indicated a definite shift
from the durable type of mer
chandise which was most in de
mand during the buying spree
of August and September.
For the country as a whole
the agency estimated retail
turnover at IS to 22 percent
better than year ago. In the
major regions increases were as
follows:
,New England, 12 to IB per
cent; east, 12 to 15; middle
west, 14 to 20; south, IB to 23;
southwest, 20 to 25: northwest,
11 to 14, and Pacific coast, 15
to 20.

sage given at the weekly dinner-meeting
of the Lions club

Medford, the Rev. R. W. Cole
man, pastor of the First Christ
ian church and a member of
the club, asked that thanks be
given for the freedom and lib
erty enjoyed by the people of
this country.
"We should give thanks for
religious freedom," Mr. Cole
man said. "And mark you that
religious freedom was gained
not through the processes of
legislation but by the prepara
tion of the hearts of men
through Christianity."
Wives and friends of Lions
also attended the dinner. The
assemblage participated in a
song-fest led by George Buch
anan. Ralph Ogle was accompanist.

by, pastor of the First Methodist
church. President Roosevelt's
Thanksgiving proclamation was
read by the Rev. R. W. Cole
man, pastor of the First Chris
tian church. Other pastors took
part In the service and the First
Christian church choir 'of 25
presented a number of appro
priate songs.
The service was sponsored by
the Medford Ministerial associa
tion. The offering will go to the
Jackson County Tuberculosis
association.

Deplores Armistice Day Parade
To the editor:
As an American soldier of
the regular army and a World
war veteran with 28 months of
service "over there" In the
World war, I want to say that
I think that our Armistice day
parade of Nov. 11, 1941, was
the poorest set up of any I have
ever witnessed.
I am a member of the Vet
erans of Foreign Wars and also
the Disabled American Veter
ans of the World War. and back
east where I came from we
always took the lead in all mili
tary parades. But In our Arm
istice day parade November 11
here In Medford we had to fall
in behind everything else, which
don t think is right for an
American soldier who has given
his all for his country and is
still willing to give what he has
left.
Now when it comes to Old
Glory our American colors rep
resent freedom and liberty
forever that rates respect by all
Americans. But that Is some
thing the people of the west
don't seem to realize. When the
American colors are passing
down the street unfurled the
public should stand at attention
with hats off or at a salute.
That Is the way soldiers are
trained, which I believe Is right.
But as the world grows older
the public seems to have less
respect for our wonderful flag
of the U.S.A., the Stars and
Stripes forever, which all real
American soldiers have fought
for and are still willing to fight
to the death for if called upon
to do so.
Now dear comrades and
friends, I have taken part in
every Armistice day celebration
since the World war of 1917-
1918 and I expect to take part
in all the rest of them as long
as I live. But dear people of
the public, please get that pat
riotic feeling on national holt
days, especially and pay due re
spect to the national colors
which represent everything that
America stands for, life, liberty
and freedom forever.

port News Shipbuilding and

Secretary Knox declared it no
accident that the? Indiana, third
of her name, was ready for
launching six months early.
