Rex Putnam Tells Teachers
Profession Among Most
Important For Democracy

day, Rex Putnam, state super
intendent of public instruction,
spoke on 'Public School Educa
tion and Defense." Teaching is
one of the most important agen
cies in regard to democracy,"
said the superintendent He
mentioned the bouk for high
school students entitled. "A Call
to the Youth of the Nation,"
which can be obtained by writ
ing directly to his office.
The conference program was
highlighted by an address by
Governor Charles A. Sprague,
who indicbted that according to
available data, it setmed to him
that Oregon should endeavor to

the school year from 171 to 176.

to make budget provisions for

of the Oregonian. His topic
was "The Happy Ending." He

In the afternoon session of
Forum, the discussion on "Amer
ican Defense Program" was held.

bill. Jenkins said the "Lend
Lease" bill was a realistic piece

labor difficulties, which if fol
lowed without freezing prices
would make the laborer a wage
slave; second, freeze both prices
and wage at the present level,
or third, scale the wage for both
labor and management fellow

i WENTY-ONE vears seem a Ions time when looking ahead, but
i -
M looking back it seems but yesterday that we opened our modest
J little Groceteria in the Medford Building. There were plenty of
food stores in Medford then. 34 to be exact. Less than 200 people
for each store in Medford's 6600 population. Looked like a foolish ven
ture as many of our friends frankly told us. Had we intended running just
another store, our -friends would have been right, but we had an entirely
different plan. Ours was to be the kind of food store we had always
hoped to find. A store that would sense the responsibility of feeding our
loved ones and so faithfully discharged that responsibility that it would
become a contributing factor to our home life.
The close of the first World war brought about a complete evolution of
the food store. The old fashioned counters and bins were passing. Sci
ence had thrust riw and more serious responsibilities on the food mer
chant. To measure up to that respon sibility he had to have a complete
knowledge of foods. Not the kind gained from advertising propaganda
but a true knowledge of food value and food customs that would en
able him to make a valuable contribution to the home life of those he
served. He had to see his store as an integral part of every home he sup
plier!. He had to realize that health, hospitality, happiness and last, but
not least, the financial security of those he served were so dependent on
the food he sold that his right to stay in business would ultimately be de
termined by his contribution to home life.
Sensing that responsibility and antic'pating the four-fold task involved in 5)
bringing the four essentials of bett-r home life, health, happiness, hos
pitality and financial well being to t'tose we hoped to serve, your Groce
teria, 21 years ago, opened in a community already having too many
food stores. What small measure of success we have enjoyed we attribute
to the fact that over all of the 21 years we have conscientously devoted
ourselves to acting as your food buyer.
We tried to the best of our knowledge and ability to fit into your home
plans. We never allowed ourselves to forget that the food we sell can
have a good or bad effect on your home life. To us our markets have
never been looked upon as just a bu-iness in the ordinary sense.- We feel
' ourselves to be a most vital part of your homes, making daily contribu
tions to your home life. The foods we sell are merely the packages in
which we hoppd you would find that contribution Health, Hospitality,
Happiness, Financial Security and most of all lasting friendship. That we
have partially succeeded is attested by the fact that wherever women are
