however, the Ural industrial
and mining area, which Russia
has been developing feverishly
for soma years, can be com
pared in many ways to the
United States Appalachian re
gion. But in actual productivity
the almost-lost Ukraine, with
the Iron mines of Krivol Rog,
the Dnieper manganese deposits
and the Donets coal, presents a
closer parallel.

"If the Russians lose all their
Caucasus oil fields, the loss will
be comparable to the United
States having to abandon the
Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma and
Kansaa fields in addition to those
cast of the Mississippi. Both
nations would have considerable
oil supplies to full back on.
The United States position, with
the rich California and other
far-western state wells still un
touched, would b better than
the Russian in this respect. For
it Is thought that the Soviets
have not yet largely developed
their oil resources in the Volga
Ural, Emba and Asiatic areas.
"Although the Ukraine wheat
production now represents only
about a quarter of the total
Russian crop, the still serious
loss of Ukrainian wheat fields
would as yet have no counter
part in this area-for-area com
parison with the United Stales.
For the great American wheat
growing regions all lie to the
west of the Mississippi river,
from central Texas north to the
Canadian prairie provinces. E"en
the rich corn belt extending
from Ohio to Nebraska would
be occupied only un its eastern
fringes. Likewise, east of Mos
cow and the Ukra'ne, Russia has
vast agricultural 'ands as yet
untouched by war."

Walter R. Whldden, deputy
regional Boy Scout executive,
arrived in Medford this morn
ing for a two days series of
meetings with local scout of
ficials, according to Larry
Schade, Boy Scout council pre
ldent. "Mr. Whldden, office has
general supervision over all
Boy Scout work In the north
west region," said Schade.
Whidden will spend Dart of
the two days aiding the locai
scout executive, K. A. Wells, to
compile results of a recent
council-wide survey conducted
by a special executive board
committee consisting of Dr.
Walter Redford of Ashland,
Cole Holmes and Rev. H. O
Gardner of Medford. The sur
vey was made in an effort to
study scientifically the possibili
ties of scouting In this territory
and Its progress to date.

ford Rotary club this noon. To
night he will attend a special
Loyalty Dedication meeting In
McCloud, Cal., and tomorrow
night will meet at dinner in the
Medford hotel with the special
survey committee plus Larry
Schade, council president, and
Eugene Thorndike, council

School Janitors in
Threat to Walk Out
Tacoma, Nov. 18. (AP)
Operating and maintenance em
ployes of the Tacoma public
school system today threatened
to strike November 24 unless
wages and working conditions
were adjusted.
About 73 employes. Including
Janitors, who belong to the AFL
Engineers' union, would be in
volved. Robert Ross, union business
agent, said the strike was threat
ened "only after repeated efforts
of the employees to reach an
agreement with the school board
over working conditions, hours
and wages, had failed."
