17 (AP) The German motor-
ship Odenwald, seized In the
south Atlantic by units of the
U. S. navy, arrived here this
afternoon under American es
cort.
She was traveling under her
own power.
It was understood that prompt
action would be brought in
United States court to forfeit the
ship, 3,098-tonner listed as
owned by the Hamburg-Ameri
can line, for disguising herself
Illegally as a U. S. merchant
man.
Washington, Nov. 17. (AP)
The navy announced today that
the disguised axis merchantman
captured by a cruiser in the
South Atlantic was the German
ship Odenwald and that it ar
rived today at San Juan, Puerto
Rico.
In a detailed eyewitness ac
count of the seizure November
6, the navy said the vessel had
left Yokohama, Japan, two
months previously, had made its
way around Cape Horn and was
believed headed for the occu
pied French port of Bordeaux.
3.000 Tons Rubber
The cargo consisted of more
than 3,000 tons of baled raw rub
ber, many American-made auto
mobile tires with inner tubes,
bags of peanuts and rice.
The navy identified the vessel
as a Hamburg-American line
hip.
JThe crew numbered 33 men
and 12 officers, all but one of
whom were transferred to the
cruiser. One man remained
aboard the Odenwald to accom
pany the seized ship with its
prize crew to San Juan.
The navy said that the mer
chantman used the name of the
Willmoto of Philadelphia. The
American flog flew forward and
aft when the ship was over
hauled, and flags were affixed
or painted to other parts of the
ship.
The disguised Odenwald was
first sighted at dawn November
6 about H miles from the
cruiser. A searchlight signal
brought no reply. Later, when
the cruiser drew nearer, the
warship's officers were given to
understand that the vessel was
bound from Cape Town,
Cargo Jettisoned
"About this time during the
megaphone conversation, we ob
served packages being thrown
over the side a continuous
stream of packages," said the
navy's eyewitness version.
Suspicious, the cruiser's com
mander ordered a boarding
party to Investigate. As the sail
ors left the cruiser, the Oden
wald hoisted an International
code flag with the signal mean
ing, "I am sinking please send
boats."
As the warship party reached
the ship, two explosions occur
red and lifeboats put over the
sides.
The Americans were told the
vessel would sink in 20 or 30
minutes. The cruiser's com
mander thereupon organized a
repair party which boarded the
Odenwald and started the suc
cessful struggle to save the scut
tled vessel.
The navy still refrained from

It divulge the author of the "eye

Broadcasters Barred
The German government has
banned the Berlin representa
tives of three American broad
casting companies from the air
the National Broadcasting
company, the Columbia Broad
casting system and the Mutual
Broadcasting system. It Is charg
ed that these representatives
submitted unlustifled com
plaints to their companies with
out previously negotiating with
the Reich . Broadcasting com
pany. Now, Irrespective of the argu
ments over these charges, the
thermometer would seem to reg
ister a state of nervous tension
In Germany.
Assuming that Berlin Is get
ting publicity which it doesn't
want, or fears future disclosures.
I think we can find reasons for
the Nazi attitude in the follow
ing. Debit side: Hitler has fallen
so far behind In his program for
crushing Russia and winter has
him In such an Icy grip that Mos
cow reports Nazi soldiers are
being frozen to death. Berlin
denies this, but there is no de
nying his armies are encounter
ing such difficulties that they
may be stalled, until spring. If
this should happen he would
have suffered a major defeat.
German Losses
Are Terrific
German losses In lives and
equipment have been terrific, a
fact which cannot long be con
cealed from the home public and
Is bound to cause depression.
The conclusive victory and the
fruits thereof which had been
promised the people still evade
Nazi arms. Clearly the priva
tions of another belt-tightening
winter must be endured. On top
of that comes Propaganda Min
ister Goebbels' gloomy call up
on the population to prepare for
a longer war and one requiring
vast national sacrifice if victory
1s to be achieved.
The allies are growing strong
er. American production Is be
ginning to hit Its stride. The

There are a lot of ways that the average man
can express his patriotism. Flag-waving is one
way. Standing up when you sing "The Star
Spangled Banner" is another. Buying defense
bonds is better than either. And the reason
why buying defense bonds is good is that it
requires saving. Any man who really is saving
is helping his country.
And here is one patriotic idea that any man
can follow:
Pay your bills.
