Five children died in their
blazing home today while their
mother, Mrs. Frances Perrine.
widow, was across the street
caring for an invalid neighbor.
The dead were Elmer Perrine,
nine, a crippled youngster who
didn t go to school today because
his foot hurt; Francis, five; Rich
ard, four; Michael. 3, and Don
ald, five and a half months old.
The baby died In a hospital
after his mother raced Into the
blazing house and carried him
out. She suffered painful but
not serious burns.
When firemen extinguished
the flames which gutted the In
terior of the house they found
the bodies of the four other chil
dren huddled under a bed.
A pursuit plane has been
built which resembles In its
cutlines the flying reptiles of
the age of dinosaurs.

The remedies are simple. A
courageous fixing of all prices
and wages might alone accom
plish the result in our situation.
This does not mean the loose
formula suggested by the admin
istration, or the far feebler bill
now in the house, would do the
job, but an arbitrary over-all
law, making violations a crim
inal offense (for inflation is a
crime against the people), might
be sufficiently observed to ef
fect the results. Because this is
not now even being considered
is the main reason a severe in
flation is accepted as inevitable.
Rationing could be imposed
as an implement of enforcement,
if necessary. (Mr. Gaston men
tioned this at a possibility for
next year).
Taxation is being offered by
the treasury as the main anti
dote, but outside economists list
it third. Utmost revenue is
needed to finance the defense
effort anyway, so if these taxes
serve the secondary purpose of
absorbing the excess income of
the people, it can thus be Justi
fied. But the old fashioned lib
erty bond would do much of the
same job better.
pHIS kind of inflation is not
difficult to understand. It
means a boom that gets out of
control and results in a crash.
Prices rise so fast they cannot
be sustained. The dollar cheap
ens in value every time a price
rises. More dollars are needed
to buy food and clothing. Fin
ally, the dollar may buy only 50
cents or less of what It formerly
bought. When people come to
see this and lose confidence, the
crash begins.
No one beats inflation. Only
a few speculators, lucky enough
to time their operations success
fully, have ground for hope.
Those who possess anything of
value feel the full percentage
effect of the loss. The poor man
generally loses his job or his
home or his automobile (any
thing he does not own outright).
The farmer,' least able to pay
his debts and taxes, generally
loses most.
But there is a tendency among
worker and farmer to like the
high prices and good living while
they last, not looking forward
to the time of suffering ahead.
Thus an absence of popular pres
sure on congress and the admin
istration for courageous action
is generally noticeable.
'TWERE are no' hedges against
inflation. Financial experts
tell you to buy things of ma
terial worth, like jewels, land,
antiques, possibly common
stocks. But if you try to sell
these in the post-boom depres
sion, you will probably find the
market for them suffered as
much as anything else.
The best advice I have heard
is make yourself most valuable
in the work you are doing by
increasing your knowledge and
skill. That is the best job in
surance and the best hedge
against inflation you can get.

enough people will soon be
talking about it, to cause the
government to do something ef
fective to avoid It.
