Effort to settle the 19-day-old
strike of 1,200 AFL workers at
the Long-Bell Lumber com
pany's Weed plant took on new
importance today with a threat
by the AFL to call out 10,000
men in other mills all over nor
thern California and southern
Oregon unless an agreement is
reached.
It was understood the main
difference was over the union's
demand for a union shop clause
providing all Weed plant em
ployes would have to Join the
union within 30 days.
The strike extension threat
was served on the company yes
terday by Matt Pavolka, AFL
Pavolka said any mills that
accepted order meant for the
Weed plant of Long-Bell would
be struck Immediately. He set
next Sunday as the date of a
rally of AFL unionists at Klam
ath Falls, Ore., to decide further
action.
Mills that would be affected
by an extension of the Weed
walkout are situated as far
southward as Westwood and
Susanville, Calif., and north
ward to Klamath Falls and Pine
Ridge. Ore.
The only possibility of an im
mediate peaceful settlement ap
peared to lie in a proposal by
Federal Labor Conciliator And
rew J. Gallagher for the ap
pointment of a three-man board
to conduct a hearing at which
both sides would present their
differences.
Gallagher suggested that the
hearing be held in Weed.

8eattle, Nov. 8 (.IP) Yakima
apples were placed on the na
tional unfair list of the AFL
Teamsters union here last night.
Dave Beck, western leader of
the union, declared that team
sters had already stopped the
flow of Yakima apples to the
Seattle market and had notified
locals all over the country not
to handle the Yakima product
at fruit markets or brokers, to
buy them or even to eat apple
pie in restaurants which used
them.
The action was taken. Beck
caid, to back up demands for
a closed shop by a teamsters
union affiliate in Yakima val
ley packing houses. Strike votes
have been taken against several
plants.
Joseph Cheney, Yakima at
torney and spokesman for pack
ers, said the teamsters affiliate
had failed to prove its mem
bers were a majority of the
packing house workers. The
union, he added, had declined to
negotiate wages, hours or work
ing conditions except on a
closed shop basis.

The dozens of "doljar-a-year-
men" on defense assignment
here faced investigation today
from both the senate and house
sides of the capital.
Chairman Truman (D.. Mo.)
announced that the special sen
ate defense investigating com
mittee was checking carefully
on all the business executive
and other expert who have
flocked to Washington to ac
cept places in the mushrooming
defense set-up.
"Nobody can live here on a
dollar a year," Truman said.
"We have asked for all infor
mation on corporation connec
tions, other salaries, and defense
contract awards to former or
present employers."
On the house side, Rep. Cof
fee (D., Wash.), a leader of the
so-called liberal bloc, said that
group expected to "expose the
connection of dollar-a-year men
in defense agencies with big
corporations" with an aim of
ousting these officials.
The outspoken representative
said that 100 members of the
liberal bloc hoped to show a
connection between award of
huge defense contracts to large
corporations and activities of
"dollar-a-year men" with other
officials here.
Members of congress and re
liable government agencies
said that nobody knew
exactly how many such
executives now are at
work here. But Representative
Coffee quoted the Peoples Lob'
by. Inc., an independent invest
igating agency here, as listing
258 "dollar-a-year men" serving
various agencies during June
with 188 of these in the Office
of Production Management. -

flying boat bearing the appro
priate name of "Mars, said that
it "and similar ships will add
greatly to our navy's growing
strength."

3,000.000 women volunteers to
help put over home defense pro
grams.
'We must lose no time. La
Guard! told a meeting of repre
sentatives of 6? women's nation
al organizations.
Miss Eloise Davison, assistant
civilian defense director, told
the women that the first step was
tf.e setting up of local volunteer
Civilian defense bureaus.
She estimated that 4,197,500
women volunteers altogether
could be used. This included
200,000 aircraft Warners; 25,000
tc check citizenship records;
700,000 to serve as drivers,
nurses and air raid wardens,
500,000 home gardeners, 1,000,
000 trained in first aid, and the
remainder in other phases of the
program.

said tonight the body of a mid
dle-aged woman, her head bat
tered and her spine fractured,
had been found in a bed at the
home of Jack E. McCoul, for
mer Puyallup superintendent of

McCoul, who reported the
presence of the body himself,
was jailed without charge.

TO START SEASON

Southern Oregon College of Edu
cation dramatic club, will open
the drama season on November
17 with a collection of three one
act plays. The plays will appear
under the title of "On Stage".
The three one-act plays are:
"In the Zone" by Eugene O'Neil;
"The Duel" based on the play,
"Andrew Jackson" by Angus L.
Bowmer; and "A You Like It"
by William Shakespeare.
In "As You Like It", the stage
setting will closely resemble the
original stage settings and the
player will be dressed in color
ful costumes typical of that time.
The play, "In the Zone" will
require modern costumes. Only

AMUNDSEN ALIVE,
Rome, Nov. 8. (JP) Stefanl
carried a round-about and
wholly unconfirmed report from
Stockholm yesterday that a man
resembling the long-missing Nor
wegian explorer, Capt. Roald
Amundsen, and bearing his sur
name had been seen living
among Eskimos at Fort Bay,
Greenland.
The Stefanl account quoted
the German-edited Norwegian
newspaper Deutsche Zeitung as
saying information to this effect
had come from "n officer of
the North Alaska Trading corporation."
"It 1 not possible to say If
the tory Is an invention," the
Italian news agency added.
Amundsen, veteran Arctic
explorer, disappeared In June.
1928, when he went In search
of survivors of the Italian air
ship Italia which was wrecked
while returning from a flight
