Back to School Day, Friday,
at Junior high school was high
lighted by the Good Book
Week Assembly. Approximate
ly 200 parents renewed school
day memories by visiting their
children's classes throughout
the afternoon.
The program began with as
sembly at 1:05 p. m. Earl Barn
hart, student body president,
called the meeting to order and
after a brief businesa session
turned the assembly over to
Bob Barry, master of ceremon
ies, and the parents and stu
dents were then entertained
with the following numbers:
Living Pictures, characters from
famous stories, portrayed by
members of the literature
classes; numbers by a mixed
chorus from music classes; a
Good Book Week quiz contest
conducted by Elaine Walker;
and awarding of prizes in the
good book contest and the De
fense Saving Stamp Essay com
petition. Winners in the book
contest were Helen Rubenstein,
9th grade; Nancy Rinabarger,
8th grade, and Elaine Sherwood,
7th grade.
Climax of the assembly came
when Mayor H. S. Deuel pre
sented the Defense Saving
Stamp prizes. The essay contest
for 'defence stamps was spon
sored by the defense committee
and carried out through the
junior high English classes. The
contest was divided Into three
divisions, one for each of the
three grades. Three prizes were
awarded to winners in each
grade: first prize, $1; second,
75 cents; third, SO cents.
Firms posting cash awards
were First National bank for
the 9th grade, U. S. National
bank for the 8th grade, and
Mann's Department store for the
7th grade. Ninth grade winners
were Elaine Walker, Phyllis
Whitlock, and Dorothy Hanson;
eighth grade, Ruth Gaston, Don
Browne, and Audrey Johnson;
seventh grade, Lottie Hill, Bon
nie Edwards, and Keith New
ton. Assembly opened with the
flag salute and closed with in
structions to the parents "to not
get lost."
After assembly a full day of
classes was run off with fifteen
minute periods. Parents had a
first hand opportunity of not
only seeing their children at
work but to also see the school
under actual operating condi
tions. Tea was served in the
cafeteria by members of the
cooking classes and everyone
voiced congratulations to Prin
cipal Linn and the junior high
faculty for successfully execut
ing such a worthwhile activity.
Back To School day is a sched
uled meeting and an important
part of the Junior High Parent
Teacher program, and everyone
is looking forward to next
year's meeting.

May wheat here were $1.15's-3
and $ 1.2 1-1.2 Ui; for corn 77V4
and 83 '4, and for December soy
beans 1.7Hi.
Brokers said some selling, par
ticularly in the soybeans and
corn pits, was based on prospects
of more favorable weather for
harvesting and movement of late
crops. Proposals to alter the
pending tfrice control bill to pro
vide for lower minimum ceilings
or farm products also kept the
market unsettled.
