Official Radio Implies Peace
With Russia Possible
When Aims Achieved.
Helsinki, Finland, Nov. 7
The official Finnish radio has
circulated abroad an important
statement of aims which says
that Finland's war with Russia
will be ended "as soon as the
threat of renewed attack has
been removed and her frontiers
made secure."
A broadcast implied that Fin
land would quit fighting once
that aim was achieved, leaving
to a peace conference of the
dominant powers sometime in
the indefinite future the final
J determination of her new boun
daries.
Interpreting a reference to the
peace conference, authoritative
Finnish sources said this in no
way implied negotiations with
Soviet Russia.

The Japanese government announced it was sending Saburo
Kuruiu (above), former ambassador to Germany and who signed
the Axis Alliance for Japan, to Washington, D. C. from Japan by
Trans-Pacific clipper in an effort to reach n accord with the
United States. The clipper plane was being held at Hongkong
pending his arrival there by plane from Tokyo.

face of 185 by 85 feet, will for
mally open its doors to south
ern Oregon's winter sports en
thusiasts Saturday.

where in Oregon, the arena will
celebrate its inauguration with
a four-day series of special floor
shows staged by five of the best-
known figure skaters in the
northwest.

are Lael Peters, 11-year-old
feminine Ice star; Dorothy and
Ralph Beymer, Bobble Morri3
and Kenny Spence. They'll en
tertain the spectators and local
skaters with comedy acts on
ice, graceful dances and pair
routines.

Also scheduled for Saturday's j
opening night will be the crown-;
ing of the queen of the winter i

The huge frame structure, ;
well over 250 feet in length,
will house a modern glass-enclosed
coffee shop, to be oper
ated by Dick Phair. The cof
fee shop will face the ice to
enable patrons a free view of
the skating at all times.
Big Skat Stock
Also in the front of the build
ing will be the skate sales
room, stocked with 600 pair of
skates to assure purchasers a
perfect fit; the. skate rental
room with a large stock, and
the office. Entrance to the arena
will be on South Crape street.
The street has been graded and
graveled and will provide park
ing accommodations for 300 cars
in the immediate vicinity of the
arena.
A glass enclosed balcony,
well-furnished and heated, will
be available for spectators who
desire to watch the skaters.
Skaters will be prohibited from
entering the balcony. Music for
the skaters will be provided by
a fine pipe organ, and a recording-system
and speaker.
There will be three inches of
glass-smooth ice on the Ice sur
face when the arena opens, ac
cording to Mr. Bourque. The
ice, built up from the refrigera
tion system, is surfaced by
planing it with large shaver
towed behind a tractor. After it
is mooth the ice is flooded and
frozen to make a new sheet of
ice, this operation being done
after every session, Mr. Borquu
explained.
Kiddies will be the first to
try out the ice Saturday morn
ing, with a session from 10 a.
m. to noon. There will be two
matinee sessions Saturday, from
1 to 3 and from 4 to 6 p. m.,
and two evening sessions from
7:30 to 9:30 and from 10 to mid
night. Following are the schedules
of sessions Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday:
Sunday 10 to 12 a. m., 1
to 3. 4 to 8. 7:45 to 10 p. m.
Monday 9:30 to 11:30 a. m.,
3:15 to 5:15, 745 to 10 p. m.
Tuesday 10 to 12 a. m., 1 to
3, 4 to 6, 730 to 9:30, 10 to 12

JAPANESE ENVOY

Saburo Kurusu, the special Jap
anese envoy en route here on
a Pacific Clipper, was reported
today to be bearing an Imperially-approved
formula for a
peaceful settlement of Japanese
American problems.
Kurusu's dispatch case, dip
lomatic circles here said, .also
may enclose a personal message
from Premier General Hideki
Tojo to President Roosevelt
presenting the Japanese govern
ment s view of the tense far-
eastern situation and proposals
designed to assure what Japan
considers an amicable solution.
Secretary Hull and other state
department officials profess,
however, to have no authorita
tive information of Kurusu's
mission, or what proposals he
may be bringing from the Jap
anese government.
Official reaction was summed
up: Wait and see.
