Mary Smith, 55, of 812 Cedar
street, struck by an automobile
at Holly and Haven streets
nbout 6 p. m. Thursday, was
confined in Sacred Heart hos
pital today with a broken left
arm near the shoulder, abras
ions of the head, a cut on her
right hand, bruises and a back
injury, the extent of which had
not yet been determined.
The attending physician said
her injuries were probably not
serious, but that she would be
forced to remain in the hospital
for some time. X-ray pictures
were being taken of her injured
back today.
The automobile, according to
city police, was operated by
John Spackman, 51, of 620 Oak
street. Following the accident
the driver stopped, took tha
victim to his own home and
then went to the police station
and called a doctor, who took
the injured woman to the hos
pital. Spackman told police that he
was driving north on Holly
street, and that as he made a
left turn into Haven street the
left headlight of the car struck
the southbound pedestrian as
she started across Haven street.
He told police he didn't see the
woman in time to stop or
swerve his car to avoid striking
her.

46-year-old war veteran who
worked as a chef at Midway
island the past year was held
today for the federal grand Jury
on a charge he had attempted
to send two maps showing vital
defenses of the mid-Pacific out
post to his wife in San Fran
cisco. The man, Edward John Co
quelle, testified before the U.
S. commissioner yesterday that
his nephew, Alfred Muson, had
inadvertently put the maps in a
suitcase while helping him pack.
Lieut. Wendell F. Brooks of
the Midway base, a witness at
the hearing, said the maps were
issued to Coquelle as a mem
ber of the volunteer fire de
partment, and show complete
details of the naval station as
well as bombsight locations,
gasoline storage tanks, water
wells and other details.
The maps were found in Co
quelle's luggage when it ar
rived here two weeks ago. Co
quelle was arrested upon his ar
rival Tuesday.
DAVID HOLMES JUNIOR
PLEDGED BY AD FRAT
David Holmes, Jr., sophomore
at the University of Oregon, has
been pledged to Alpha Delta
Sigma, advertising honorary on
the Eugene campus. He is serv
ing as circulation manager on
the upper business staff of the
Oregon Daily Emerald, campus
newspaper.
Holmes is majoring in adver
tising. He is the son of Mrs. Kin
ney Holmes, 22 Geneva street
and David Holmes, 1327 Reddy
avenue.
Corvallis (Spl.) In asking
the restoration at Oregon State
college of the school of com
merce, lost in the reorganization
of 1932, the college is again
seeking to comply with the
policy of the state board of
higher education as established
at the recent Ashland meeting,
says Dr. F. A. Gilfillan, acting
president.
"Oregon State college was a
firm supporter of the plan of
co-ordinated major curricula
whereby all institutions togeth
er provided Oregon's youth with
a full choice of degree work
without duplication in the major
fields." said Dr. Gilfillan.
"With the abandonment of
this policy for that of a feder
ation of complete institutions,
as definitely stated at Ashland,
Oregon State college is duty
bound in conformity with this
new policy to bring Its offerings
in line with the needs of Oregon
students under the new higher
education program. Restoration
of the school of commerce will
be a first step toward this end.
Less Expense Cited
'This institution had been led
to believe that funds were not
available for the support of two
complete institutions in the tra
ditional sense but the action
at Ashland, effective next fall,
completes the restoration to the
University of Oregon of all its
degree work offered there prior
to 1932 plus some degree work
formerly given here," Dr. Gil
fillan continued.
"While no appropriation was
made at the time for this expan
sion, approval was given the
university statement that it
could resume degree work in
science at a cost not to exceed
$10,000. The college similarly
is now asking only the author
ity to resume degree work which
is far less expensive than that
in science.
Plan Called Sound
The report of the curricula
committee adopted by the board
stated that 'if and when the
state college or the colleges of
education present requests to
the curricula committee for cur
ricular expansion or changes,
the committee pledges Its most
earnest effort to arrive at a
decision that is educationally
sound and free from the taint
of appeasement or trading.'
"The college is prepared to
establish beyond question the
educational soundness of restor
ing degree work in commerce
and other fields of a land grant
college under the new policy of
a federation of complete institutions."
Eugene Smith, 29 year -old
Medford service station employe
who has been held here since
his arrest Saturday on a charge
of failure to stop at the scene
of an accident In connection
with the Investigation of the

sell, 17-year-old Klamath high
school girl, was removed to
Klamath Falls today by a state
policeman to have a preliminary
hearing.
Miss Russell was discovered
fatally injured on The Dalles
California highway October 25.
She died in a Klamath Falls
hospital October 31.
Smith was arrested here by
state police on information fur
nished by a Klamath Falls citi
zen, who jotted down the license
number of a car whose driver
apparently invited a girl for a
ride on October 25.

The maritime commission said
today it had authorized an ex
penditure of $442,000 for addi
tional facilities at the Oregon
Shipbuilding corporation, Port
land, Ore.
The commission said there
would be no increase In the
plant's ways, which number 11,
but that additional facilities,
ruch as shop, welding, and fit
ting, out, were needed.
The company now has con
tracts for the construction of
43 emergency cargo ships, two
of which are for delivery this
month.
