Procession To Start At 11
A. M. Tuesday Dugout
And Dance Other Phases.
After weeks of detailed plan
ning by a number of special
committees, Medford post of the
American Legion today an
nounced its readiness to present
the biggest and best Armistice
Day celebration in its history.
The event will be held next
Tuesday, November 11, anni
versary of the signing of the
armistice that brought World
war No. 1 to an end.
Various events will be sand'
wlched between a patriotic pa
rade in the morning and the
customary ball late at night.
Because of the present world
crisis, the celebration this year
is expected to attract more in
terest and arouse a greater feel
ing of patriotism than ever
before, the general committee
said.
Patriotic Parade
The day's events will be
opened by a salute of several
bombs at the armistice hour
of 11a. m. The parade will get
under way immediately after
ward, the procession forming in
the side streets off Main street
in the vicinity of city park. This
year the parade will be strictly
patriotic in character and so
there will be no commercial
entries, the committee stated.
Many patriotic, religious, civic
and fraternal organizations as
well as granges, schools and
other like groups are expected
to march. The committee said
there would be plenty of mar
tial music, with several bands
and drum corps representing
schools, lodges and patriotic
orders spaced throughout the
procession.
The famous "dugout" will be
opened after the parade. The
"dugout" program this year will
spotlight five Imported vaude
ville acts, with a number of
other attractions added during
the afternoon and evening.
Danes To Climax
Special programs have been
arranged at all the theaters, the
committee said, and this year
the new Medford Ice Arena will
be an added attraction for the
throng expected to be attracted
to town by the celebration.
The ball, climax of the cele
bration, will start at 9 p. m.
and continue until 2 a. m.
Steve Whipple's augmented or
chestra will provide the music
and old-time favorites as well
as the latest dance tunes will
be played, the committee as
sured old and young dancers.
A floor show will provide added
entertainment.
Official American Legion script
will be accepted for admittance
to all attractions on the entire
day's program.
Dean Match Folder
Brings Letter From
Gary, Ind., Yonngsler
A. Z. "Tubby" Dean today
had one of his Pontiac Sales &
Service match folders that had
travelled all the way to Gary,
Indiana, and back again. With
the returned folder, now empty,
came a letter from Maxine Dow
ney, Route 2, Box 338C, Gary.
Miss Downey wrote:
'I thought I would write to
you and tell you that my father
got one of your match folders.
I thought it was interesting tr
know that a match folder got
all the way from Medford, Ore
gon, to Gary, Indiana.
"My father works at the
American Bridge company. I
have often wondered what Med
ford, Oregon, was like. Maybe
sometime I will be able to see."
How the match folder got to
Gary or Into Miss Downey's
possession the letter did not ex
plain. The handwriting was that
of a young, grammar school
child.

Passes Suddenly At
Home in Long Beach

Word was received in Eagle
Point Sunday of the death of I
John M. Wilfley who passed
away suddenly at the family
home in Long Beach, Calif.,
October 28. His wife, Ann, and
one daughter, Jane, and two
sons by a former marriage sur
vive him. The Wilfley's were
former residents of this com
munity having owned an or
chard northeast of Eagle Point
for several years, and have
many friends here who will
regret to leai.i of his demise.
Jehovah Minister in
Draft Evasion Net

Avery Alton Wilkins, 28-year-old
Grangeville farmer who
claims to be an ordained min
ister of Jehovah's Witnesses,
pleaded innocent to a draft
evasion charge in federal dis
trict court here today.
The indictment charged that
Wilkins, after having been rec
ognized as a conscientious ob
jector and placed in the classi
fication 4 E by the Idaho coun
ty selective service board, re
fused to report on August 12
for service in a civilian camp.

Asked for Bonneville
Washington, Nov. 7 VP)
President Roosevelt asked con
gress today for an Immediate
appropriation of $30,000,000 for
additional construction for the
Bonneville power transmission
system.
In a letter to Speaker Ray-
burn, he said the funds were
needed to accelerate construc
tion of the distribution system
to provide power to meet de
fense Industry demands at the
earliest possible date.
"A critical power shortage In
this area is now imminent," the
letter continued.
