American navy protection (so
far) extends only to Iceland. If
what we hear today is true,
German submarines are moving
into that area.

aid to China and putting an end

Significant, perhaps, is an

Indies today that exports of oil
and gasoline to Portugese col
onies in the Pacific are being
stopped for fear they might fall
into Japanese hands.

announces it is sending Saburo
Kurusu, former ambassador to
Germany, to Washington by
trans-Pacific Clipper to attempt
to reach an accord with the
United States "in view of the
very serious situation prevail
ing."
THE British Broadcasting cor-
poration (government-owned
and therefore subject to suspic
ion as propaganda) tells today
of "angry Finnish prowds de
nouncing Germany." It adds
that 21 persons have been ar
rested in Helsinki as a result
of such demonstrations.
Baron Mannerheim, Finnish
commander, described as Hit
ler's friend and virtual ruler of
Finland, is said to have rejected
the American warning to make
peace with Russia.
Finland probably CAN'T
make peace, because Germany
won't let her.

in San Diego. A navy spokes
man says AFL bollermakers and
iron workers can't agree on
which shall install the gates and
adds that the navy department
at Washington will be asked to
decide which union shall have

I recommend "Call It Courn
age" by Armstrong s perry to
any one that likes tales of cour
age and adventure. It is the
Newberry prize book for this
year, too.
It is the story of a little boy,
who Is looked down upon by all
the islanders because of his fear
of the sea. Mafatu and his dog
leave the island for another one,
they know not just where. When
they reach the island Mafatu
finds out it is an island where
the dread eaters of man come
to make their horrible sacrifices.
When Mafatu finally escapes
and goes back to his island he
has overcome his fear of the sea

"Nancy Drew"

Caroline Keene, author of the
Nancy Drew mystery books to
any mystery loving person.
Nancy Drew is the daughter
of Carson Drew, famous crim
inal lawyer, Nancy, like her
father, is famous for mystery
solving and she succeeds in solv
ing every mystery she gets
mixed up in.
"Nancy Drew" is a series of
girls' books but I think boys
would enjoy them, too. Marga

"The Story of Clara Barton of
tha Rad Cross"

I recommend the "Story of
Clara Barton of the Red Cross",
It tells her life story and how
she began the American Red
Cross. Her adventures and hard
ships, as a child, a teacher, an
assistant In the Patent Office,
Washington, D. C, and nurse
are all told in the vivid writing
of Jeannette Nolan, the author
of this book. I think that girls
and adults would enjoy this

Tha Peat of tha Cralgla House"
By Hildagarda Hawthorne
I recommend the book 'The
Poet of the Cralgie House", by
Hildegarde Hawthorne. It is
filled with vivid descriptions of
theVife of Longfellow led while
in his childhood and when he
was older, and of many sad
things and his wife's tragic
death. It is also a story that tells
of Longfellow's childhood desire
to become a poet. He did become
one of America's most renouned
poets and was honored in the
Poets' Corner of Westminster

jumped from $3,000,000 to 8,

Ross, Portland Chamber of Com
merce president, last night told

week. Hadley said employers

"We may all be thankful that
the local dealers In building
materials can secure a priority
rating and will continue to meet
the home-bulldlng needs of our
community," says an article' In
the current periodical of the
Lumber Merchants Association
of Northern California. The ar
ticle was prompted by the gov
ernment's rescinding of its pre
viously announced policy of
halting all but strictly defense
building.
Asserting that It seemed a
wise policy to continue home
building, the article cites three
reasons why there should, be
no stoppage now: serious un
employment would result as the
building Industry in the United
States is second only to agri
culture; home building requires
an insignificant amount of criti
cal defense materials; and noth
ing is to be gained in closing
the building industry to ac
cumulate the small amount of
critical materials it uses for de
fense work at a much later date.
Because of the small amount
of critical materials it uses, the
article says, "it would ' seem
that home building can continue
without Injury to the defense'
program." It was stated also
that substitutes can further re
duce the amount of critical
materials going into home construction.
The belief in vampires, which
may be traced back as far as
the 11th century, is still widely
current among the Slavic people.

eritus of Massachusetts and

land's most noted families, died
in his home late yesterday of
a heart ailment at the age of 01.
The bishop, a cousin of Dr.
A. Lawrence Lowell, president
emeritus of Harvard university.
Was the son of Amos Law
rence a prominent merchant,
but abandoned plans for a busi
ness career to serve with the
church.
