hall here Friday, November 14
at 8 p. m.

the campaign In new 4th con
gressional district in which Mr.
Dover Is candidate on the Demo
cratic ticket in the May pri
maries. Dover, a lifelong Democrat
and active In the party since
the World war, is a native

Active in veteran affairs since
his return from France, Dover
is the immediate past depart
ment commander of the Dis
abled American Veterans. At
the state legislature, in March
1941, Mr. Dover took the suc
cessful lead in securing in ap
propriaton of $10,000 from the
state to secure the national con
vention of the Disabled Amer
ican Veterans for Oregon. The
convention will be held in Eu
gene in 1942.
In the past 10 years Dover has
been active in the northwest
and Oregon in the Townsend
and old age pension groups, and
was the national delegate to
both the Chicago and Cleveland
Townsend national conventions,
serving as chairman of the Ore
gon delegation, which numbered
320, at the Cleveland conven
tion. Response to Dover's candidacy
has been very favorable wher
ever contacts have been made
throughout the seven counties
of the 4th district.
The meeting at Rogue River
is sponsored by the Floyd K.
Dover for congress committee
of which Earl Grizzell is chair
man, Sandy Blakely vice-chairman
and William Hartman, Sr.,
secretary.
Worth Smith of Tah-Wah-Wi
ranch near Rogue River will be
honorary chairman at the No
vember 14 meeting.

state highway- commission said
today that its meeting in Port
land scheduled for November 12
and 13 has been postponed to
November 17 and 18. The com
mission will open bids on $1,
000.000 worth of projects at the
meeting.

77-Year-0ld Memo
From Uncle's Shop
When City Councilman
Thomas G. Bradley was rum
maging through Frank Zell's
curiosity shop in Jacksonville
the other day, he notice 1 a
small piece of paper tacked up
on a window. Upon examination
he discovered that it was a bill
of goods made out on Oct. 28,
1864, by his uncle, A. E. Paine,
who then owned the Yreka
Bakery at Yreka, Cal.
The statement, written In a
hand still easily read, was for
198 pounds of soda crackers at
12Va cents a pound, or total
of $24.30. The crackers were
delivered to H. Heln.s at his
store in Jacksonville, the Helms
being a pioneer family in south
ern Oregon. Mr. Bradley found
the statement on October 27,
almost exactly 77 years to the
day after it had been made out
by his uncle, he related today
He bought the curio and plans
to send it to his uncle's son,
Frank Paine, of San Francisco.
In handwriting over Mr.
Paine's signature the statement
said: t
"We send today per Mr. Por
ter two boxes of crackers. Will
send another box to fill your
order the first of next week."
In a corner of the letterhead
was printed the information:
"Soda crackers, sugar crack
ers, Boston crackers, butter
crackers, ginger snaps, brown
bread, pies, cakes, etc., kept
l constantly on hand."
